I honestly don't know why.

They probably want the countries to prepare their case, or wait until official reports are done.

I guess otto is going to be retired because klaus got retired. I guess bonnie will too because it put a heavy brief downpour over florida.

Don't be so sure.

Bonnie was a flop...flopped like Christina Aguilera this year.

According to the WMO website, we will know in mid-March. Meeting is from March 7 to 11 in George Town in the Cayman Islands.

Here will be my guesses on replacement names, for ANY possible retirements.

Atlantic
Alex - Adam or Anthony.
Earl - Ethan or Evan
Hermine - Hayley, Harper, Helga, or Heather
Igor - Ian or Ichabod. I still find it ridiculous that you guys think Ian is too close to Ivan. That's just delusional.
Karl - Kellan or Kurt
Matthew - Milo, Mickey, or Martin
Tomas - Travis, Trevor, Tyler, or Toby

If Jamaica and the other islands are cranky then:
Nicole - Natalia, Natalie, or Natasha. It would be a shame though if Nicole is retired. it's my favorite N name out of the six N names, and my favorite name on the list.
Otto - Ozzy or Owen.

Eastern Pacific
Agatha - Arianna, Alonna, Alyssa, Aness, or Alana (either spelling seems plausible).

I think Alex, Karl, Matthew and Tomas will be retired. I don't think Igor will be retired because it wasn't as bad as Juan back in 2003 (at least I remember hearing more about Juan's effects on Canada than Igor's). I think Juan set a benchmark for Canada hurricanes and that will be the measuring stick that Igor will be up against. As for replacement names:

Alex-Alan
Karl-Konrad
Matthew-Mark
Tomas-Tad

They already used the A-L-L-E-N spelling and it was retired. I don't think they will use that name as a replacement.

Because all the sexy K names were taken. Keith, Kirk, and Kyle.

I suggest Kellan.

Well sometimes they have a tendency to replace a name with another name of similar origin. For example Karl is a common name in Germany therefore Konrad or other Germanic K name would make sense. Juan was replaced with Joaquin etc. As to the Allen/Alan thing, Frederic in 1979 was replaced with Fabian which was then replaced with Fred which could more or less be interpreted as a shorter version of Frederic.

Like anyone cares about shortened versions. if it sounds different, go with it.

That was my point. Except why should it matter if its different spelling. It was the closest example I could find to same spelling.

Meeting reports are starting to come up - http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/HC-33.html

British Caribbean Territories, Canada and Bermuda have their reports up.

The most interesting is that Igor damage was over $200M in Canada, and it was their worst hurricane season since 1959.
