Hurricane anniversary

#1 Postby LaBreeze » Sat Jun 27, 2009 3:29 pm

Today marks the 52nd anniversary of Hurricane Audrey. Quite devastating to my family. Anyone else on here remember Audrey?

I don't remember it. It was before my time but being from Cameron Parish it strikes in the heart in all of us. My thought and prayers goes out to the families who went through this terrible storm and the ones that came after.

I grew up in Port Arthur. I was 10. My mom, dad , and brother had gone to San Antonio on vacation leaving my infant sister with my grandparents. I remeber going into a coffee shop for breakfast and my parents seeing the headlines in the paper. That was the fastest breakfast ever. We threw stuff in the car and headed home. I remember after we passed through Houston the further east we went the more damage we saw. We were so glad to get home and find house and family OK. There was such devastation just 12 miles across Lake Sabine.

after the Jarvinen 2007 study... Audrey should be the poster child for a hurricane not having to be a cat 4 or 5 to be destructive

Actually, shouldn't Agnes be the poster child?

Well, until it's "official" I'm still going with Audrey being every bit of a Cat 4. Yep I remember Audrey--the moniker should give that away. I was a kid at the time, not even 10; but I do remember it because it was my very first experience with what later became something of a passion of mine--that being hurricanes. I was in the back yard of our 9th ward home, and this huge gust of wind blew a hammock I was attempting to put up, out of my hands, and all the way up the drive and into the street. I was amazed at this, and all the rapid moving clouds overhead. I remember my Dad saying "It's that storm, Audrey, that's pounding Cameron Parish--that's what it is."

It's been sort of a love-hate relationship ever since. I still find them quite fascinating; but not enough to "long" for any more in my area (see rest of the moniker).

Sorry, OT... but it's sure nice to see you posting around here again, A2K. I've missed your insight.

Well, thank you, Mike, for those very kind words. It's been rather a long haul since my last activity--to be sure. I guess it comes with the territory of gettin' older huh? Well, you wouldn't know much about that--one day though, cause it happens to the best of us. Anyway, since one of the two storms that affected my outlook toward them the most was the topic of this thread (not to mention 1/2 my moniker) I just couldn't resist chiming in. 8-) Good to hear from you as well Senorpepr. Always nice to see a familiar...uhh.... avatar! LOL. Albeit last time I don't think it was in Deutchsland. Hope all is well on your end of the network!

I kind of forgot about inland flooding there, lol. If we want to include that, maybe Allison is the poster child. That flooding may have done more damage to the city of Houston itself than Ike (though not overall, since Ike had total destruction of the NE Texas and SW Louisiana coastline)

I was 8 at the time. Lost my baby sister and our house to Audrey. I'll never forget it.

That's so very sad... and I can truly relate... I lost my old home in Katrina, and my new Apartment was flooded up to 3 feet inside... and I lost a cousin who was the brother I never had as a kid as well.... these things have some pretty unforgettable aspects to them, for sure.
