Just about now we should be receiving the output of the large solar eruption, apparently visible in the night sky to those in the more northern parts of the world. I know less about solar activity (zip) than I do about tropical meteorology (almost zip) so maybe someone can tell me whether such an occurrence can impact on our main focus on this board - TC season!

There was one poster who was talking about this on one thread around here. I just can't remember who it was.

Now I remember: "I'll take a punt and say its not a surprise the deep ole solar min came along at exactly the same time as the downswing, as did the -PDO phase kick in stronger (I believe the 1998-2000 signal was a false dawn, this is the true starting point of the -PDO cycle) and those two factors play a part.
Of course if we take the 1998 analog, its still VERY early days.
Actually the global picture is nearly identical with 1998 right now, 2010 arguably a touch more busy at this stage.
1998 didn't get its first long lived system in the WPAC till the 22nd of August, Bonnie didn't get going till about the same time, so we are ahead of the curve thus far compared to that year."
KWT posted this another thread earlier perhaps he could answer your question

Some time ago, it was decreed that Space Weather posts would go in the Astronomy and Geology section. That's where you find my current report on the ongoing Gemag storm plus any others to follow. Incidentally the flare event was not a particularly large event in terms of Solar Flares and the CMEs are probably not horrendously strong either hence I'm expecting a relatively low key Gemag event at most a low Category 3 but most likely Cats 1 and 2.
