IMPORTANT INFO ON STARTING/MAINTAINING THREADS FOR WAVES AND INVESTS

#1 Postby AJC3 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 11:09 am

Gang,

We are reminding the members about when it is acceptable to start, and not to start, threads for areas of interest or strong tropical waves that have yet to emerge from Africa and may have potential to develop down the road. Also included is a guideline about starting Invest threads. Please read the guidelines below:

When is it acceptable to start a thread?

1-When there is an incipient area of disturbed weather or a tropical wave in the basin, or a tropical wave that that is 12-24 hours prior to hitting the water off the coast Africa; OR

2-When an area of potential development mentioned for the first time in the NHC Tropical Weather Outlook.

When is it NOT acceptable to start a thread?

1-For a tropical wave/disturbance that is well inland over Africa - for example in Nigeria, Niger, Ethiopia or Sudán. Ideally, you should wait until the wave axis, or center of the disturbance and its associated convection has gotten at least a few degrees west of the Greenwich Meridian/0 degrees. For reference, Dakar, Senegal, at the western tip of continental Africa, is located near 14.7N 17.5W

2-For potential development indicated by model guidance that has no area of disturbed weather associated with it, and hasn't mentioned in the NHC Tropical Weather Outlook.
It doesn't matter whether every single global model shows it developing. There is a Global Model Runs thread for such discussions.

Any thread of this type that is started will be merged into the thread linked above, and may result in a board warning if this type of activity persists.

ALSO: If you start a thread about an area of disturbed weather, then you MUST take on the responsibility of keeping the thread title current and representative with respect to location.

When is it acceptable to start a thread for an Invest?

We will only allow starting an Invest thread when the Invest/number actually shows up in this directory.

Hopefully these guidelines will help the forums run smoothly. Happy tracking to all.
