When i first saw it on twitter i thought it was a meteorite impact. The eruption/explosion was heard in New Zealand and appeared on pressure readings on weather stations in Australia.

I showed the eruption on Satellite to my Grandmother, she thought that an Atom Bomb blew up there.

All observations are in Tecumseh, OK unless otherwise noted.

It's like a hot tower going off when TC is going through RI.

Much of the west coast continues to be under a tsunami advisory.

The NWS is saying that the Tsunami Advisory will continue until 'Further Notice'

Amazing satellite images in display here. This appears to be the largest volcanic eruption so far in the 21st century. Sounds like the Tsunami was bad over at Tonga. Hopefully the volcano is done now.

It will also be intriguing to see the climate effects from this as well.

Daylight over Tonga, looks like a huge plum of ash over the area.

Here's a pretty cool visualization from Weathernews, Japan.

Air pressure obs at Nuku'alofa, Tonga during the eruption. Pressure rapidly dropped from 1005mb to 984.3 mb at 04:41 UTC, then rapidly rose up to 1010mb in 10 mins (almost as if a cyclone briefly passed over). Also notable sharp rise/fall in air temp by 1-2C at that time.

That's insane.

How does this compare to, say, Pinatubo? So far this eruption appears to have been weaker than that of 1991, to not mention that of Krakatoa (1884).
