I'm sort of rooting for Irving if Ian gets retired (hey, it's not technically definite yet, right?). It's probably one of the most well-known I names ever that they seem to be avoiding like the plague for some reason.

If Ian does get retired, I think Idris could be a good replacement. I feel like they'd want to save Irving or a better-known name for if someday Isaac gets retired

Fiona has to be retired after what happened in PR with the catastrofic flooding that caused 16 deaths and hundreds of families without homes that were swept by the waters and mudslides and lost all their belongings including cars.

Literally anything can replace Noru. The West Pacific (and North Indian) naming system is certainly unique.

Fiona will probably be retired for its significant and quite rare impacts in Canada. Wikipedia says it’s the costliest Canadian system with >$700 million in damages. Interestingly, the estimated toll from PR is “only” $100 million.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Yeah, I think "I" names are too short. Ida, Ike, Ian.

Irving would be good. Another idea? Ichabod.

I was hoping we could somehow spare a retirement if Ian takes the due N path through the GOM and weakens to a TS towards a panhandle landfall, like the GFS showed. Unfortunately, that aged like milk.

There's no "probably" about Canada asking for Fiona's retirement. Canada already has history for retiring storms (Juan and Igor) with much lower damage figures. Fiona is 100% a goner. And the way it's looking, so is Ian.

Ian is certainly heading for the :Can:. That's 2 retired names in a near-average season already. Shades of seasons like 1996 and 2001.

Ichabod is a very interesting case as a name which the great majority of people in the USA have heard of because of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but which actually may be no longer given to human beings. In the 1950 census, the latest one where full data has been released, the youngest Ichabod was born in 1936, and was a Jr. The next youngest Ichabod in 1950, out of 30 total, was born in 1915. If the man born in 1936 is still alive he'd be 86 years old, and I would not be surprised if he were the last Ichabod born in the USA.

Of all of the replacement names possible for Ian, Irving sounds like a pretty obvious candidate, considering it's a decently common and known I male name that has yet to appear on the Atlantic naming list. But of course, the WMO could definitely explore Middle Eastern names like Ibrahim or Idris (after all, they do have Omar on List 6, lol, so why not)...

I'm a bit concerned about Irving sounding too similar to EPAC's Irwin, but I guess we don't have a choice lol.

Maybe we go with very international names. Ingmar is a Swedish male name famously born by director Ingmar Bergman. There’s Ivor, which is also Scandinavian, and the similar Ivar. Ilya is a Russian name. Ioannis is Greek. Imran is another Arab name.

At this point it will be better to just remove I from the naming lists like Q/U/X/Y/Z. Seriously.

That would screw up the male/female order though. Maybe they’ll remove it when there are absolutely no options left.

Things would be so so much easier if we had a J curse instead, at least in terms of names. How many unique female and male names start with J? Compare that with I
