Himawari-9 to Become Operational on December 2022

#1 Postby doomhaMwx » Wed Oct 05, 2022 8:40 pm

The Himawari-9 satellite (launched in 2016) is slated to become operational and replace Himawari-8 on December 2022. JMA has already been releasing preliminary data since September 27. Himawari-8 and 9 have exactly similar specs and both are positioned at ~140.7E.

Announcement from JAXA:
Sep./27/'22
[Distribution of the Himawari-9 test data]

Towards scheduled replacement of the Himawari-8 to the Himawari-9 in Dec. 2022, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) started test data dissemination of the Himawari-9 in parallel with the Himawari-8 since Sep. 27, 2022. JAXA P-TREE system also started data dissemination of the Himawari-9 HSD files. File format of the Himawari-9 data is the same to that of Himawari-8 except file name is started with "H09". JAXA also plans to distribute Level 1 NetCDF and geophysical parameter products of Himawari-9 after checking data status.

Beautiful imagery. Almost looks similar to the "True Color" visible satellite images.

The Himawari-8 satellite made its final scan of the earth at 04:50-04:59 UTC today (Dec 13), and thereafter, all its duties and responsibilities have been officially passed on to Himawari-9.

Himawari-8 revolutionized weather tracking in the Asia-Pacific region. Arigato gozaimasu!
