CONTEST: Lets Play a Round of "Guess That Storm"

#1 Postby chadtm80 » Mon Apr 14, 2003 7:11 pm

I saw this at "another" less fun board  and thought it was a neat idea.. So here it is

Heres how this works: You make a forecast of when the first landfalling hurricane or tropical storm will be and where, and what its windspeed will be.

Whoever is the closest gets bragging rights at the end of the season. (hey its all we got) LOL Only one prediction per person!

scoring goes like this:

Location:
within 10 miles- 10 points
within 50 miles - 5 points
Within 100 miles - 2 points
within 300 miles - 1 point

Date:
within 24 hours- 10 points
within a week - 5 points
within a 2 week period- 2 points
within the month - 1 point

Strength:
within 5 miles per hour - 10 points
within 10 miles per hour - 5 points
within 20 miles per hour - 2 points
within 40 miles pre hour- 1 point

What do you think about doing this for every storm this year? We would have to modify things for Landfall/No-landfall ... could have total points for the year .... Just an idea! :-)

I know the last couple of years I ran informal contest with each storm - where it would make landfall or if would be a fish .... people emailed me their picks and we posted them on each time - mostly it was for bragging rights.

I am with Chad - we will come up with rules and regulations and etc and post it for all the read and then participate.

I wish I was more into this sort of game. I like to follow tropical systems, but when it comes to weather related contest (games)... I have trouble getting my ideas put forth.

I am not sure why and for this I am very sorry.
