Wind speed indicators

I am in the market for a wind speed indicator, and thought you all might be able to point me in the right direction. I am looking for something reasonably priced, and that can stay mounted outside (not hand held). I would like to have a maximum reading (so I can say, Yea, the wind was really blowing we had a gust to 80 mph). Not really intersted in hooking it up to the computer or anything fancy like that.

Wondered what you all had, and if you would recomend it or not. Or if you saw something (and can point me toward a web site or store) where you saw something you liked.

Davis Instruments makes a really nice set that can be expanded to include a self-emptying rain gauge and temperature/barometric pressure as well. It's in the $200 - $300 range, but I've been pretty happy with it so far.

I too was looking for one. Brookstone didn't have them.
Went to Radioshack and they were only $9.99. The clerk handed it to me and I started laughing. It only registered up to 30 mph. Well I am still looking for one. What stores besides the internet can one be obtained?

Get a weather station Davis is good BassPro shops carry them.They carry all type of weather stations from 199-359.00 and I am getting one shortly.

If you are just looking for an anemometer, try http://www.inspeed.com
they have some reasonably priced ones including a Pole mounted one.
Otherwise try a Davis station if you want a whole station setup.

Thanks all. Sorry, I am in NC, no palm trees here.

That inspeed one looks nice and in my price range, I will look into one of those I think.

Why don't you create the Palm Tree Wind Scale? It would be in great demand when the anemometors blow off their poles.

Seriously, we watched one very tall palm sway in my neighbor's yard here in Lakeland during Jeanne. That thing was doing a mean lean!
