Actually
the use of names for storms (and of both genders) was started by an eccentric Australian Meteorologist named Clement Wragge who assigned Polynesian Female names to Tropical Cyclones and male names to Monsoon storms and Extratropical Lows with the names of his detractors usually reserved for storms of ill repute. He was also the first to recognize that the air flow of the NW Monsoon over northern Australia originated as the NE monsoon in the Northern Hemisphere over Asia.
