la Nina / el Nino effects

#1 Postby hcane » Thu May 01, 2003 2:16 pm

There have been some posts and questions as to the level of tropical cyclone activity in the Northa Atlantic basin, and that level relating to el Nino/la Nina. Some numbers to ponder.... and these numbers are based on data since 1950... el Nino/la Nina based on NOAA CPC (Climate Prediction Center)
below is thye average number of storms in the season following

Cold Event Neutral Event Warm Event
11.64 10.04 9.60 months AMJ (April/May/June)

11.25 10.43 9.33 months JAS (July/Aug/Sep)

It seems as though there is at most a difference of 2 storms. In the grand scheme of things, this does not appear to be terribly significant.
As well, the highest number of storms has been recorded not in the cold event years, but in the neutral and warm years. Example, 1969, 19 storms, an el Nino year. 1956, 8 storms, a la Nina year.

I will have landfalling statistics later to prove that the effects upon the Gulf of Mexico are much more pronounced than along the east coast.
