I think there is too much complaceny here in Palm Beach county with this one. Since I expect 74-90mph sustained winds in parts of the county with gusts up to 120mph+, there is going to be widespread damange that will exceed Jeanne/Frances quite significantly. Katrina really added to this complaceny as this storm was all hyped up and the most we saw was a 64mph gust in Boca Raton. The Palm Beaches had only wind gusts only into the 40-50mph range.

Agree that there seems to be an enormous amount of complacency in Palm Beach County from what I can see. I am surprised that more people have not put up shutters or boarded up (seems like it is a lot fewer than with Francis or Jeanne); in fact I am the only one on my street who put up shutters today.
We just got back from Publix (we had to restock our hurricane supplies consumed over the past 3 days in anticipation of Wilma) and the store was crowded but not crazy. As I recall the scenario was completely different last year. A friend went to Lowe's and there were lots of people shopping for carpeting, plumbing fixtures and the like.
Just my thoughts.....

We still haven't decided whether to put up our shutters. News Channel 5 says to expect wind gusts 80-90 mph, and my husband doesn't feel it's worth the effort putting up shutters on our 2 story house. If it were up to me, I'd put them up, but I'm pregnant and wouldn't be too good trying to balance on a ladder. No one here seems to think it will be bad. Out of 150 houses in my neighborhood, less than 10 have put up shutters. Most people here don't think it will be anything close to jeanne or frances (I have no idea if it will be worse or not, but that seems to be the reason for complacency).

I think that many were waiting to see what strength Wilma is expected to have when it comes ashore.
We have a little better idea now and I think you will see a lot of sutters going up Sunday Morning.
I have waited, perhaps a bit complacent based on Katrina; but intend to put them up in the morning.
What is surprising to me is the throught that it will give us worse than we got for Francis and Jeanne. More surprising to me is that the experts claim we did not even get Hurricane force winds from Francis. I was sure that we did but Derek says we only experienced TS conditions here in Lake Worth (and south of here). Sure seemed like a whole lot more.
So, if we are expecting worse than Francis (supposedly TS only) and Jeanne (we had Cat 1 conditions); then it is a no brainer to put them up.
Hope you all enjoy reading me argue with myself!

People in Palm Beach are taking this way too lightly.
The main reasons right now are
1) Katrina was way overhyped and hardly did anything to us
2) Wilma has weakened to a CAT 2 over the Yucatan and has given
people a false sense of security (she's back on her way to major
hurricane status tonight)
3) She is approaching from the SW rather than the E like Jeanne/Frances.
But people don't realilze that due to her speed and strength, she will
weaken very little crossing the flat everglades.

Here in Broward, I just finished shuttering the house...not gonna fool around with Wilma. CPA is supposed to be 50 miles or so in 44 hours.
With hurricane force winds extending out 85 miles from the center at present (and according to NHC wind field is expected to expand after landfall) she is too close not to prepare as though Cat 3 conditions are possible. Just my .02.

Can someone explain this to me? - We've had this storm potentially coming our way for days now (since Tues. I guess). Well, we're now under a 'cane watch and the lines at Home Depot, etc. are so long. Why do people insist on waiting till the last minute down here.
And another one - my father-in-law brought this up. Every storm there are tons of people getting supplies, but what do they do with them after the storm - through the wood out? I mean, sheesh....you'd think at some point every Floridian would have at least plywood LOL

a. its human nature to wait and people have seen canes supposed to come and they dont although recently thats not the case. its kinda of like studying the night before the test.
b. i think some of these people throw out the plywood when they are done due to lack of storage or lack of brain cells. think of all the absolutely stoopid things we see during and after hurricanes from residents. bottom line, there are plenty really dumb people around.
