I was miserable after last years storms and without power for almost 2 weeks. But on the "bright side", it is not expected to be as hot next week....

Yes, I think we're all going to be real grateful for that cold front.

Re: did most windows yesterday, doing another one or two tod

Weatherboy1 wrote:Got the second floor and some first floor windows that are more exposed done today. I'm going to finish with one or two first floor ones today, but leave a couple un-shuttered (that are under an overnhanging porch roof and therefore sheltered, plus will likely end up on the "lee" side of the storm). I'll be getting to work in an hour or so. In my development, some people were already shuttered while others (like me) were doing the work yesterday. I'd say that overall, only about 1/3 were done by sundown yesterday.

i am rolling out my "strategic hurricane panel deployment plan" which means the west side and south side of the house is getting shuttered up. i have 4 foot overhangs on the whole house so i am not that concerned about the north and east sides, lets see how this new plan works.

This is for everyone in south florida......do not take this storm lightly...make sure if you have shutters you rush to complete them today....even a strong cat. 1 will cause some damage and remember if you don't put up your shutters and something happens to your home, the first thing the insurance company will ask you is if you had your shutters up...good luck to everyone in Wilma's path...although this may not cause catastrophic damage, we still need to watch out for tornadoes....so be vigilant and hang in there..... :D

good post, we have had a shift to the south in the models that look like a key west to miami run for wilma, if that were to verify expect a stronger system then say if it was naples due to less land interaction of the center and of course fuel from the gulf and atlantic but we it is uncertain what the shear will do..bottom line your preperations should have been the same anyway as it was always to close to call. prepare like it is taking the southerly route and you will do fine, dont try and outguess model shifts and all that from this point forward as we are too close in. prepare for a 2/3 in our part of the world.

Yep, I agree...this is what I have been looking for to make the decision to shutter up...I might not do the entire house....but most of it. Take a look at the TAOS website for damage and wind impacts for Wilma on the projected path...really cool site with interactive maps:

Great site JP. Very cool. We just finished putting up the plywood. Still deciding whether to ride it out in our house or go up to the kendall area to my inlaws house. Their house has a little better construction and they have MUCH better shutters.

Everyone needs to be prepared for a possible Category 2 wind event. This is worse than anything from Frances or Jeanne. The windfield is large as well, so the TS winds will last a long time.

Remember that if you have a newer home that the builder was required to provide you with shutters (new code) if you do not shutter them ALL up and you get hit insurance will NOT pay your claim. If you read all the fine print you will realize this. Just a word of warning.

Please tell me what insurance company and what page on your policy shows that. I have been an insurance agent for 12 years and have never seen anything like that. I have seen insurance companies take away the shutter credit but never deny the claim. I would really like to know where you are seeing this. That being said, not putting up your shutters in a hurricane is just stupid. Always prepare!

Thanks CaneClaw, anybody else know?
It's less important as to when PBIA closes (unless you work there 8-) ) but you should check with the individual carrier as to if a flight has been cancelled. Many use 50mph as the cutoff. But, if 50 is expected later on they may not even bring the flight in. Or - esp. if it is a layover from the night before - fly it out early (to protect their assets.)

In my development, as of 3 PM, I'd say about 1/3 of the houses had been shuttered and those were all done today. Hopefully, some of the laggards will see the activity and get their tailwinds in gear.

People don't really seem to be preparing for this one as much as Frances or Jeanne near where I live.

Just in case you hadn't heard, Miami Dade schools are out for Tuesday as well. Also, a little while ago, Max was on WFOR with Bryan Norcross and said to prepare for a Cat 3 and landfall.

I'd planned to sleep early, wake early, but I suddenly wasn't tired and sleep wouldn't happen. Anyone else unable to sleep? Guess it'll be an all-nighter. When we get real tired, we'll sleep in our safe room with our animals.

Awful windy and rainy here. Had to take the dog out to do her thing. She's freaked out, no doubt. The cats, not so much. The rats seem to be a bit, though. The hamster, nothing. I have a mini-zoo.
