I'm sure we all remember where we were, or what we were doing on August 24th 1992, when hurricane Andrew was ripping across South Fla.

So take a second today to pause and remember those affected by the now 2nd most costliest disaster in the country.

I'd even be willing to bet 14 yrs later some parts of South Fla may still be reeling in some ways shapes or forms.

Yes I recall it VIVIDLY... aside from the fact that I knew it was cutting a swath of destruction in Florida, I was in the Den with friends and family and we were all discussing its ultimate course. I said I had a gut feeling it was going to come ashore again in Louisiana, somewhere in or near Vermillion Bay. It was an unforgettable event in any sense of the word; but that kind of prognostication made it particularly memorable in my own retro-look into the past.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Same here....loudest night of my life.

Actually, at this exact hour on the night of August 23-24 1992 I wasn't concerned about Andrew at all. I had Tropical Storm Lester located about 30 miles to my north and was videotaping the strong winds that were shredding my fruit trees. With no power the enxt morning and no power all day at work (except for our field generators which we needed for other purposes, I really didn't get a chance to see on TV what had transpired with Andrew until I got home from work.

That was an interesting night, 30+ people in our fortress. My great grandpa wrote the FIRST hurricane building code in the world, when he was the chief inspector for miami beach in the early days. Needless to say, my family has some strong homes But sadly ours is the only one that is Inland.

I remember a video tape from TWC I saved about Andrew. When it got to Louisiana, Jim Cantore was actually looking a bit funny when he was waiting for hurricane force winds in Baton Rouge, and only light rain and winds of 10 to 15 mph happened when he was there near the center. He couldn't believe it !

Fourteen years ago an event changed the face of a land in a matter of hours. Hurricane Andrew was the turning point to many people in South Florida. Andrew showed everyone that Florida was a peninsula looking toward tropical waters and that in these tropical waters hurricanes form and hit land. It was a generation that had not experienced a major hurricane in their lives. Before Andrew, Betsy in 1965 was the last major hurricane to hit South Florida. Many Ivans will come, many Katrinas will come, many Ritas, but Andrew's place in the history of this country will remain intact in the hearts and memory of the people. This kind of hurricanes show us that even though our advanced civilization is still under the control of Nature.

The only time in my life when I really thought I was going to die....At that time I lived in West Kendall, about 4 miles north of devistated Country Walk and I'll forever have the after-images in my head. Looters at my local Office Max (broad daylight, noone saying anything), armed Military men, tent cities, homes ripped apart like doll houses the sound of helicopters ALL over the skies... I could go on and on........

South Fla was changed forever after that. Populations shifted, neighboorhoods abandoned, Homestead Airforce base was closed... Southwest Broward was flooded with people moving in from Dade. There are neighboorhoods that until the recent real estate boom, were just left to rot.

I certainly remember Andrew, thought our roof was coming off, but we survived just fine. Wilma is the one that has left me reeling though. I'm living in Georgia now thanks to her, my condo building is still condemned thanks to her! October 24th 2005 will be the day that lives in infamy for me!

I remember that night all too well. My roommate at Auburn was from Homestead. We watched on t.v. in Auburn as Andrew plowed through her hometown.

My mom and I were on our way to visit some relatives in Detroit MI. I think that we flew the day that Andrew hit southern Florida. We were in Detroit when Andrew came ashore in southern Louisiana.

I remember Hurricane Andrew. In Texas, there was fear, it might hit us. Now, there is Hurricane Katrina, which much worse.

As a young firefighter I spent many days and nights in FLorida City and Homestead following Andrew. It was surreal. I was born and raised in SF and new the area well, so I thought. I will never ever forget.
