Rogue waves can occur anywhere in the open ocean as their formation is not restricted to hurricanes. They can (and have) also occur with deep extratropical systems.

I've always been fascinated by rogue waves. I think the term my sometimes be used (somewhat) incorrectly to describe a wave that is simply larger than the waves in general on any given day.

I think one type of rogue wave that may be the most devastating is when swells of two (or more) different origin cross paths and two troughs or crests (or both) coincide so as to create a sudden deep trough in the ocean with a corresponding steep and doubly high crest.
