Why does the meteorology world refer to atmospheric pressure by the altitude in which certain pressures can be found?

This is for several reasons.

- Radiosondes actually report they mandatory and significant levels in terms of pressure (although altitude is appended).
- Meteorological equations tend to work better when pressure is used as the vertical coordinate
- Most aircraft flights are actually flown on constant pressure surfaces due to the use of the pressure altimeter.
