Wind direction

I live in Northeast PA and the wind direction is NW yet the lake effect snow bands are moving southeast. How is it that the wind direction is NW and the storm system is moing southeast?
Wind direction is where the wind is coming from.
A northwest wind means that the wind is coming from the northwest, headed toward the southeast.
