I noticed that in 1977, the Atlantic, EPAC, and WPAC all had below average activity.

Was there a particular reason for this?

We were coming off of an ENSO warm phase event which would explain WPAC and the ATL but not EPAC.

Sorry, if I bump this topic. I saw on this page, that the El Nino was not as strong as compared to other El Ninos. I find that odd because the hurricane season in the ATL, EPAC, and WPAC was quiet, if not the quietest on record. I don't know about the southern hemisphere though.

Southern Hemisphere had 25 TC's a little bit below the average of 28. It was just one of those years when the Tropics became quiet. Happens every now and then. I was in the Philippines in 1977 and although the season was slow (a record at the time) we still got whacked good in November by TY Kim.

Must be some sort of oscillation.

I wonder if in 1977, anything unusual happened in terms of climate that would explain why basins worldwide were quiet?

I know the answer. It was the year I switched from an engineering major to meteorology to study hurricanes. They all ran away!

Uh-oh.

I don't know how accurate this is, but I happen to look at North Indian Ocean and in 1977 it was slightly above average.
