A friend asked me

What would happen if a tsunami passed through a hurricane? Would they effect each other?

Remember in the open waters of an ocean, a tsunami is barely noticable. I don't think there would be any on either.

I have no clue on this one. I would ask Mike W on tonight's show if it isn't pre-recorded.

In deep water there should be no effect. Along the coast, there are a number of variables involved as to whether or not a tsunami would significantly enhance a storm surge or not.

Has it ever even happened (or been recorded)?

I doubt there was ever a recorded case of this happening but the chances of it ever happening are extremely low to begin with. Keep searching.

The chances of a tsunami's shoaling together with a hurricane surge are too small to worry about.

This would, though, make a good movie plot, where some evil genius who controls both the weather and earthquakes figures out how to make it happen and takes out someplace he's mad at. A 30' tsunami plus a 30' storm surge would be a real problem for, say, New York City. :ggreen: HPH
