BTW there was a minor error in Geography. Chanchu was the strongest May storm ever in the SOUTH CHINA SEA not the YELLOW SEA which is the body of water between China and the Korean Peninsula and which, as far as I know, has never had a typhoon intensity storm there in May. Only about a 600-700 nautical mile error in location.

My bad, Chanchu at peak intensity was about 15 degrees of latitude south of the Yellow Sea-that's about 900 nautical miles.

What was the deadiest typhoon of 2005? In do they retire these things...In what is the chance this one will get retired if they do?

From what I can tell, WPAC names do get retired, but I don't really think Chanchu is quite notable enough for retirement.

Well, 3 typhoons in 2005 had deaths tolls higher than 100.

Typhoon Talim: 162 dead/missing
Typhoon Damrey: 154 dead/missing
Super Typhoon Longwang: 148 dead/missing

The deadliest typhoon of the decade so far has been Typhoon Lingling from 2001. Lingling left around 380 dead/missing.

JMA has been issuing advisories on Chanchu for the last 24 hours or so for some reason, even though it's clearly been extratropical since then.
