Very sobering photos, which represent just a tiny part of the world's troubles...

Frank

P.S. Geoff needs to adjust his date - it's December 1 over there...

The rain from Durian mixed with volcanic ash from Mount Mayon and produced mudslides that engulfed 8 villages. It was reported that in some areas the mud was up to the roofs of homes.

Technically, those slides are called Lahars. The loosely consolidated and hot ash from recent eruptive activity is easily loosened during a heavy rain and Mayon's slopes are perfect for accelerating the lahar flow down the mountain. Lahars from Pinatubo killed more people and caused more destruction than the actual eruption did. They still get occasional Lahars from Pinatubo even now.

Blessed that we were in the U.S. this year, everybody pray for the people in the Phillipines. They have had ENOUGH over there with Cimaron, let alone Chebi and now Durian. :(

Might as well be their Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.

Chebi only killed 1 and Cimaron 19. Durian is much, much worse though. Xangsane, and now this.

Actually, the Philippines were hit by 5 full-fledged typhoons this year.

1. Typhoon Chanchu
2. Typhoon Xangsane
3. Typhoon Cimaron
4. Typhoon Chebi
5. Typhoon Durian

Hopefully, this is it for the rest of the year. However, the Philippines have gotten hit in the past by December typhoons.

The last to landfall in December was Super Typhoon Nanmadol in 2004. However, Nanmadol had formed in late November.

The last typhoon to form in December and strike the Philippines was Typhoon Faith in mid-December 1998.

Been in contact again with Geoff who is still in Naga city. He'll be going to Albay province tomorrow to check out reports that up to 300 people have been killed due to lahars. I hope these reports are unsubstantiated because that would be truly tragic!

Make that near 400 dead.. ugh

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WEATHER/12/01/p ... index.html

MANILA, Philippines (CNN) -- Red Cross officials in Manila reported at least 388 people were killed when Typhoon Durian slammed into the Philippines Friday, triggering volcanic mudslides and flooding.

In addition, at least 75 people are trapped or missing.

"Rescue teams have been sent out by boat but many areas are inaccessible," Gwendolyn Pang, executive assistant to the Red Cross director in Manila said.

Many provinces have lost power, making communication practically impossible and some of the areas are in "neck-deep" water.

According to the Red Cross, rescue boats are ushering people to shelters and are also being used to survey the damage.

Pang said Reming is the fourth devastating typhoon to strike the Philippines in the past four months.

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the western Pacific or Indian oceans.

Latest I heard was 468 dead, at least 112 missing.

This makes Super Typhoon Durian the deadliest typhoon to strike the Philippines since Super Typhoon Angela in 1995. Angela left 1252 dead/missing in the Philippines and also claimed 20 lives in Vietnam.

At this point Durian, with 468 deaths, is the second deadliest typhoon (and tropical cyclone) of 2006, behind Severe Tropical Storm Bilis (637 reported deaths).

Here's the source for the 468: http://www.mb.com.ph/MAIN2006120281251.html
