reduced to sea level renders about 125-130 kts at the SFC (145-150 MPH) ... believe TPC right now is classifying Charley at 150 mph at landfall, but not exactly sure ...

It would have been interesting data if there was a wind instument(which survived) on Captiva island where they were on the SE portion of the eyewall. There the winds would have been moving onshore with the foward motion of the hurricane!

The ref..to the 148knt was at 255pm...What was the time that the NHC is saying landfall was??

Could Charley have still been gathering strength??

Apparently Charley was at his peak just as it entered Charlotte Harbor....after passing over Captiva Island.

The recon fix while Charley was passing just west of Sanibel Island was 943 mb. After the hurricane passed over Captiva Island, the recon measured 941 mb and flight level winds of 170 mph (equates to 153 mph sustained winds at the surface). At the time of landfall, the KTBW doppler radar at WSFO Tampa was measuring 190 mph winds above the surface.

A meteorologist told me NHC is listing Charley as 941 mb/ 130 kts (150 mph) at landfall...and I agree. IMHO peak gusts in the east eyewall were 180-190 mph.

We had the avatars and signature disabled during the height of Charley to reduce the load on the server. :-)

Don't worry -- you'll get there. After all, you've barely been a member for over a week. :)
