ALEX early evening update, watches-warnings extended

#261 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sun Aug 01, 2004 5:54 pm

A tropical storm warning has been extended southward and now extends frin South Santee River, South Carolina northward to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina including Pamilco Sound. A tropical storm warning means tropical storm conditions are expected within 24 hours or less. A tropical storm watch has been issued from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina northward to Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. A tropical storm watch remains in effect from South Santee River to Edisto Beach, South Carolina. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 36 hours.

At 5 PM EDT, Tropical Storm Alex was centered near latitude 31.7 north, longitude 79.2 west or about 90 miles south southeast of Charleston, SC. Alex has remained stationary all day long. However a slow north northeast motion is expected over the next day or so. This takes the center of Alex near the Outer Banks of North Carolina by later Monday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Slow strengthening remains a possibility over the next day or so. Minimum central pressure is 1010 mb or 29.83 inches.

They all fool us every year. Once they hear we talking bad about them they stand up for they self by getting stronger.

The center is still not under the convection. Until it does get
under the convection there won't be a whole lot more intensification. It is definitley looking better in the visible and it has definitely consolidated some, so as stated above, we sit back and watch.

That blob has been so persistent all day and is getting stronger by the hour. I wouldn't be surprised if the winds are up to 45-50 in the next update and if the LLC can consolidate underneath the blob lookout!

Stalled practically over the gulfstream. This is not good. I'd say at least some intensification is likely.

It's probably just a trick of the eye by the IR satellite, but it looks like Alex may be moving ever so slightly to the east. Anyone else see this?

I think the longer it keeps sitting there the stronger it will get. Yesterdays forecast had it on the SC coast about this time.

If only Alex would avoid turning out to sea so soon, tomorrow would be actually exciting. But you never know what could happen :)

...and my mention of the cloud movement ahead of the cold front across Alabama and Mississippi 24 to 30 hours ago was played down.

It may be a little jog to the east there, but i just think it looks like that because the thunderstorms are expanding.
