You are right about surprised folks. Here in Myrtle Beach not much is being made of the storm. I think it is coming up to fast to do much to prepare. Cannot evacuate anyone now as we do not need a bunch of cars on the road while a hurricane is bearing down. Hopefully it stays Cat 1 or below. Even at that strength, after 12" of rain already this month, trees will be falling all over the Grand Strand.

Well, that kind of depends on what Gaston wants to do. He's had a mind of his own for quite some time now. If he moves west, or west by northwest, you could get some wind and rain out of it. But if he moves more north, or north by northwest, it probably won't have a huge impact on you.

It's just very hard to tell what this guy wants to do yet. But it's looking to me like north or north by northwest.

just saw the latest image on the ir and it appears to have 2 eyes, the obvious black image and also next to that on the right, maybe 2 centers of circulation not yet together, or just a show of getting better organized?

Does anyone have the latest NWS statement for Charleston that supposedly came out at 12:02? For some reason I can't get it to come up.

and since my last post the two have joined into one and def. showing signs of of getting stronger. Gaston will be a hurricane before landfall.
It sure does like the area its in, its been there forever now it seems, not losing steam by churning up the same water as usual.

Tropical Storm Gaston Intermediate Advisory Number 6a

Statement as of 2:00 am EDT on August 29, 2004

...Gaston approaching the South Carolina coast...

A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for coastal South Carolina
from the Savannah River to Little River Inlet. A Hurricane Warning
means that hurricane conditions are expected in the warning area
during the next 24 hr. Since it is not possible to precisely
predict the path and intensity of a tropical cyclone...preparations
to protect life and property should be rushed to completion
throughout the entire warning area.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for coastal North
Carolina from north of Little River Inlet to Surf City.

A tropical storm watch remains in effect from south of the Savannah
River to Fernandina Beach Florida.

At 2 am EDT...0600z...the center of Tropical Storm Gaston was
located near latitude 32.1 north...longitude 79.4 west or about
65 miles southeast of Charleston South Carolina.

Gaston is moving toward the north-northwest near 5 mph. A
turn toward the north is expected in the next 24 hours. The center
of Gaston is expected to move across the South Carolina coastline
sometime this afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds are 65 mph...with higher gusts.
Observations from the Charleston radar indicate that Gaston is
getting better organized...and it is expected to become a hurricane
before reaching the South Carolina coast.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the
center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 992 mb...29.29 inches.

Storm surge flooding of 3 to 5 feet above normal tide levels...with
higher levels in bays...is expected near and to the east of where
the center crosses the coast. Tides of 1 to 3 ft above normal are
expected elsewhere in the warned area. Dangerous high surf and rip
currents are also possible along the coast in the warned area.

Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches...with locally higher amounts...
are expected along the path of Gaston.

Isolated tornadoes are possible early Sunday over northeastern South
Carolina.

Repeating the 2 am EDT position...32.1 N... 79.4 W. Movement
toward...north-northwest near 5 mph. Maximum sustained
winds... 65 mph. Minimum central pressure... 992 mb.

For storm information specific to your area...please monitor
products issued by your local weather office.

The next advisory will be issued by the National
Hurricane Center at 5 am EDT.
