Nassau death

#3561 Postby GalvestonDuck » Fri Sep 03, 2004 10:48 am

On CBS4.com's live stream, they just reported a teenager died as a result of injuries while working on a generator.

First storm-related death. :(

I believe I heard that they have vans going up and down the highways that have some gas available to give to those that are stranded.

In Nassau, huh ...

Just goes to show you don't have to be in the most intense part of a storm to get hurt.

I've got to share a little story with you all...my friend (who I realize now is clueless) called me Wed. and told me she was coming down on Friday to the Disney area with her husband to have a vacation. She asked me how I was doing...I of course was a little taken back by all this and didn't know how to respond. I said "D" there is another hurricane coming...I just am now just recovering from the last storm. She giggles in a girlesh way and says "Oh, I no." Now, at this point I was getting a little mad..."D" I said this is going to be catastrophic...people are going to loose homes ect. People aren't coming to FL. they are leaving it...you need to stay in Ga. Well I'm from FL. I know all about storms she says to me. I just wanted to know if you thought we might be able to get together while I was down. Now you can imagine how I was feeling at this point...I said, "D" no I won't be able to visit with you this weekend...I will be home protecting my family...but do me a favor, give me a call after the storm. so "D" is now driving to FL...and all I can think as I watch TV this morning is...there is no gas for her to refuel her car when she gets in the state. :D Natural Selection...that is all I have to say...Natural Selection!

But people say the mass evacuation happened with hurricane Floyd (to name but one hurricane)....have they not learnt there lessen?

America appear to have procedures and plans for everything...and they have experienced this before (ie mass evacuatoin/fuel shortages)...surely they must have some plan...even if it is not working?

Yes, true...but I'm wondering if God is about to teach her a BIG lesson about taking mother nature seriously.

I hope she will be o.k.

There will unfortunately be deaths attributed to the storm days after it passes; falls and heart attacks during clean-up, electrocutions from the combination of standing water and downed lines or generators, etc. This is another reason that being "missed" by the eye does not mean you are not in danger.

I see a Darwin Award in her future.

I hope she has fun in the parking lot of Disney World on Sat.
I heard the Magic Kingdom will be shut down.

that is where my grandmother is in ft. pierce, thankfully she has left her home escorted by my uncle and is now in a shelter, not saying that anything can't happen to shelter, but her home just wouldn't withstand the wind, kinda like in punta gorda

Sounds like a reasonable forecast at this point.

Is rain/flooding a bigger threat than wind in Broward?

#3574 Postby jinftl » Fri Sep 03, 2004 11:02 am

Should I be more concerned about Irene-like rainfall here in Broward, or will being on the left side lessen the amount of rain this slow-mover could dump?

I think you should be concerned about both and let's hope that you bought flood & windstorm insurance!

One of the dirty little secrets these days is that that we lack the refining capacity to have a stockpile of gasoline, even if they wanted one. We are utilizing 95%+ of our refining capacity and are already delaying routine maintenence to meet normal demand.

This is the back side of overzealous restrictions on refineries. No new gasoline refineries have been built in the US in over twenty years...The new ones are in the middle east. Does that make you feel secure? At least its not in your back yard...

Here in SC, the plan is to keep small trucks running up and down the evacuation routes to change tires & fill up gas tanks when people run out on the highway.

But in SC, we can just get gas from somewhere inland that's near enough to keep the trucks full. In South Florida, I'd imagine it's impossible to send trucks down and then back up with gas. Too dangerous for the people who would be manning those trucks?

I don't know. Perhaps FL EOC call call up here to Governor Sanford's office & ask how they've got it set up in SC -- see if they get SOMETHING going on down there to help those folks out!

Best not to let our guard down at this point....live on the first floor of a condo...courtyard side that becomes a swimming pool in heavy summer storms. Neighbors are placing sandbags in front of their doors. Probably not a bad idea then.

We just had first gusty squall and i think it made people a little nervous.
