917 mb is genuinely insane. Gotta be breaking some intensification records.

Woke up to seeing a Cat 5 after it was just a Cat 2 last night. Knew it would be a major hurricane but still caught off guard.
Really wonder when Erin will make her turn. The closer she moves north of Hispaniola, that could cause some disruptions even if the eyewall stays offshore.

Dvorak appearance has continued to improve since the last pass, at this rate Erin is making a serious run at the open Atlantic MSLP record:

There is no outer eyewall for Erin on radar, there is no EWRC happening anytime soon
The image is from WeatherWise, the radar is TJUA from San Juan, PR

Does anyone know how high the wind gusts are?

Since the eyewall is still so far out from the radar site, it’s looking pretty high up. If an outer eye were building, I’m not sure you’d be able to really see it at that height.

Considering how the environmental conditions have only been marginal to okay the past few days, this is truly shocking intensification. I haven’t got this caught off guard in a while! Love tracking the tropics! Never cease to surprise and amaze!

Here's the tail doppler radar from 2 hours ago, outer eyewall is definitely developing but there's still some work to do in the North and West:

This part of the Atlantic seem to produce cat5's...Huge 89, Irma 2017, Maria 2017, (Jose 2017 yeah it was!), and just last year with Beryl

Gusts over 200 mph, sounds about right for a 160 mph hurricane that’s rapidly strengthening
