Re: EPAC: BONNIE - Tropical Storm - Discussion
It's going to be weird knowing the first storm to achieve hurricane status in the Atlantic basin this year won't technically be the first named storm of the season to do it.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Imagine the kind of storm Costa Rica would have dealt with if Bonnie responded to open ocean after clearing South America the way it’s responding now…

That is right. I talked to Phil Klotzbach via message at twitter about this and he said ACE will count for EPAC.

Nice eye forming. I wouldn't be shocked to see this as a hurricane within the next 24 hours.

Can you imagine if this happened before the new naming convention and it ended up being called TS (or Hurricane) Bonnie-Darby?

Re: EPAC: BONNIE - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Here's the thing: the EPAC in 1996 had Douglas as the strongest storm of the season, which would have been still called Cesar if the current naming rule applied. I genuinely would not be surprised but also find it amusing if this season, Bonnie becomes the EPAC's most powerful storm.
Can't wait until the future season where we see a Barbara, Kiko, Lester, or Norman in the Atlantic haha. Or better yet, a Celia or Dora crossover from the EPAC to the Atlantic.

Unless explicitly stated, all information covered in my posts is based on my opinions and observations. Please refer to a professional meteorologist or an accredited weather research agency otherwise, especially if serious decisions must be made in the event of a potentially life-threatening tropical storm or hurricane.

Lots of cold towers popping off and the CDO is expanding, Bonnie seems to have woken up after the crossover.

It wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever for ACE occurring in the EPAC to count towards the Atlantic. Keeping the name the same does make sense though.

Just a refresher...if Bonnie becomes a hurricane it won't count as Atlantic, correct?

Since it's no longer in the Atlantic, nope

I asked Phil on Twitter, he said the hurricane count would be for EPAC.

Correct. This is storm #4 for the EPAC season as well so it adds to that count.
I personally prefer the current rule that a storm that stays intact keeps its name, since it is the same storm. I'm not sure - should a storm that dissipates and redevelops also get changed to keep the original name?
