This looks like a tropical depression now, maybe even Tropical Storm Gaston?

I hope we get an ASCAT pass soon. 97L should be a TC sometime today if this keeps up, and maybe it has a shot of briefly becoming another mid-latitude hurricane.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

The WPC issued the advisory, when was the last time it happened?

Interesting. The NHC must have all hands on deck for Fiona considering it is lashing the Turks and Caicos currently.

Interesting that the advisory calls it the eighth tropical depression of the year when only seven have been operationally designated.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Four failed to develop into a TD/TS, but its number still counts in the order, so this one's TD Eight instead of Seven

ASCAT has made a direct hit, TD 8 could steal Gaston's name!

Nobody steals 98L’s name like Gaston.

Since 98L has no name yet, "Gaston" is pretty much up for grabs and there is no name to steal. So 97L is perfectly justified in doing so. Look at it this way, you'll be able to enjoy the Gaston memes again in 6 years.

Very true, while Fiona and (if the models are right) Hermine bite the dust.

I remember around the 2016 Hurricane Hermine people were calling it Hurricane Harambe. Truly a revival of Harambe memes in 2022 would be earth shattering

Tropical Tidbits is labeling this Tropical Storm 8 so my guess is it is getting upgraded at 5p

Feels like soon-to-be Gaston wants to try and be an overachiever.
