Not that anyone watching this unfold is surprised by this statement, but hurricane chaser Josh Morgerman (@iCyclone) is in Punta Gorda right now and clearly seems a little edgy. Said on his video a few minutes ago that he’s afraid this could be one of the worst hurricanes in American history.
Since he filmed Dorian at ground zero in the Bahamas and has been in 63 hurricane eyes and counting, that is horrific to hear…

Moderate wind shear makes it look messier than it is.

Why does it look like NOAA2 is going home after one pass.

They're going back in, it looks like they just flew around in a circle for a bit

I believe they were supposed to deploy some type of unmanned instrument at 11:30z, which is when they were circling.

WOW. I can't say we were expecting this. Reminds me of Michael. Feeling sick this morning.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Looks like 5 mesovorts in the eye. Pressure will drop like a rock as those get ingested.

I’m in far western Pembroke Pines near highway 27. We had several Tornadoes last night and early this morning. Would it be wise to at least close my upstairs Hurricane shutters? I live in a two story house and I’m also worried about some of the outer bands as the storm works it’s way inland. I’m about 90 miles from Naples. Thanks.

I was afraid of this. With Ian moving with the shear vector, the shear is largely assisting with ventilation to the north. The results are not the most pristine looking hurricane ever, but can still be a Cat 5 nonetheless.

Yes. do so immediately. There is no drawback to closing them.

Not sure if it'll have time for that

If I’m not mistaken, it looks like is going to smack right into Bradenton if it doesn’t make that NE turn already. I figured this thing would touch 150 mph, but I didn’t think 160 was in the cards…Lord Have Mercy

I'm not really a praying person. If you are, pray for the people in southwest Florida today. We all love huge storms, but this is really something no one wants to see and that no one should ever have to experience.
