I saw that ... and the operative word - had a value of $10,000 ...
Anyway, I'm not surprised that the bat wasn't corked ... I still believe that Sosa just made an honest mistake, and hope that his image is not tarnished.

His image will be tarnished until he retires, and it'll probably carry over after that. Even if that's the only bat which had cork, he still got caught. A honest mistake? Possibly. But it still happened, and thats how it goes.

Unfortunate ... but I have to agree.

Andruw Jones? ... Maybe, Chipper, but not Andruw...I'm been a Braves Fan for almost 20 years now ... A family friend had a boy who was terminally ill (and since has passed on) and one of his last requests was to have autographs of the entire Braves team a few years back, especially Chipper Jones, when he got the opportunity to see a Braves game...every single member of the Braves team was more than happy to sign a ball for him, including John Rocker, all except for one player...his idol (at that time, anyway), Chipper Jones ... Chipper flat out refused to sign the ball ... Can you imagine the heartbreak that boy felt? ...

My comment about Andruw had everything to do with his frequenting of strip joints and his appetite for 2 girls at a time. I was attacking his moral code, not his charitable contributions. Do I have this story all wrong??

Running out to pick up the pieces would have been a dead give away! LOL I truly hope that this was an honest mistake but it sure is hard to swallow....

I understand where you coming from now. Andruw is just thinking with a different brain (living out some fantasies) and I can't exactly deny that Andruw does seem to have a bit of an arrogance streak based on body language, but I don't think that Andruw's addiction to women would lead him to cork a bat though.

The lastest new on our local channel says the all 76 bats checked were free from cork! The commissioner is expected to make an announcement any time. Hopefully this was an unfortunate accident and Sosa's reputation will be spared. :-)

I will admit that I may have been a little quick to come to a conclusion. :-)

His explanation is simply that he uses the bat during batting practice and accidentally grabbed it. Why should we give him the benefit of the doubt? Because Sosa, unlike many of his immoral comrades in professional sports, gives back a huge amount of his salary to his home community. Sosa is a generous, charitable man (now don't get me wrong..I'm not saying the man is starving by any means), that has shown himself to be a man of extrememly high moral conduct.

Now...if this was somebody like A. Jones...I'd say ban him for life!

Andruw banned for life??? No way!!
Maybe I'm showing my Atlanta Braves loyalty, but Andruw Jones is a pretty classy guy that gives a lot back to the community here in metro Atlanta. Has Andruw made mistakes? Sure...so do many young athetes that achieve fame at a very young age; but I don't see Andruw Jones as a "baseball bad boy"...and I live here, and hear the sports talk shows every day.

Am I dissapointed in Sammy Sosa? You betcha...very dissapointed, and surprised. IMO he should be suspended for a few games..

Would I be dissapointed if Andrew were caught pulling the same stunt? Sure...and I'd expect him to be suspended --but banned for life?? No way!! Using a corked bat might be against the rules....but to put it in the same light as what Pete Rose did (betting on games he was managing in) is utterly ridiculous.
My God....even drug users get a second chance!

btw - Pete Rose was a hero of mine when I was a kid...a big hero. I sincerely hope he admits his guilt, apologises, and someday takes his place in the MLB Hall of Fame.

Sincerely,
Perry

Perry....my comment was for the most part...tongue in cheek. I am a Red Sox fan having lived in Mass. for 38 years. We are the most loyal fans on the planet. I kid around with my co-workers here in SC about the lack of fan support for the Braves. I'm praying for a Sox-Braves World Series because I KNOW I will be able to go down on game day and get a seat...no problem. The talk around the water cooler in the morning is about who caught the biggest fish last night, or what race was on...Never the Braves. I usually have to tell them whether they even played last night! So....like I said..I wasn't totally serious about "banning him for life". I was just trying to draw a comparison between the moral code of each, and why I believe Sosa deserves the benefit of the doubt.
