Why?
Why do women wear mens clothes and it is chic?
They wear mens pajamas, boxers, tshirts, suits like mens, ties, etc.
A man wouldn't be caught dead wearing something like a woman.
How did all this get started?

LOL @ the Annie Hall comment. I went thru a men's neck tie phase in the 80s. My favorite were the fabric ties, small prints, what did you call those? They had straight bottoms and seemed to be made out of sweater material.
I've purchased shoes in the men's dept. when I couldn't quite find a hiking boot I've liked.
So my extent has only been boots and ties. Other than that, I'm a casual dresser, definitely not frilly.
I own ONE dress! LOL

I've never heard her style referred to as "chic", The fashionistas call her a walking fashion disaster.
i usually do it out of necessity. there are very few women in our business so dressing as conservatively as possible is my goal for business meetings and functions. it keeps guys honest and you can be sure they're looking you in the eye and paying attention to business instead of cleavage.

Ditto on the cleavage remark. Very distracting. You can't help but look. and look again. and again. Then if they catch you, they get offended. Well don't show it off then! How hard is that to understand?
Um yes, um, could you repeat that, please? I think that our breast, er, best option would be to.....

This space for rent.
Exactly!!! Why tempt them and then feign modesty?
actually, it started about 20 years ago when we had to brief a couple of generals. the dress code was established as suit and tie. i guess the look on my face was enough to prompt the resulting comment which was meant as a joke of sorts. my boss said Well, wear a tie or a bra. So I went out and bought a man's suit, shirt, and tie and wore it to the brief. you could see my boss just dying to know if i wore a tie AND a bra.... (I didnt.)
but a hardware check would have been entirely too obvious. it was SO fun to watch him struggle.
