Has anyone here ever read the speculative explanations about what the song could mean? McLean himself has said he's kept mum about it because he knows he'll make more money from it if he leaves it to our imaginations.

I heard a line-by-line interpretation of it.... YEARS ago... can't begin to recall it all but some of it was like this:
The day the music died... direct reference to the plane crash that killed the Big Bopper, Richie Valens (sp?), and Buddy Holly...

I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news, but she just smiled and turned away....Janis Joplin

I went to the store, where I heard the music once before... referenced the closing of Filmores West and East...

There are others but it's too early LOL
