The Christmas Truce

#1 Postby Cyclenall » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:29 pm

I just read about this story from WWI and I'm amazed that this actually happened. It was Christmas 1914. It's mind-boggling that in a brutal war they would all of a sudden stop fighting and start meeting and giving gifts to each other and doing other things like talking and playing sports! I makes me think that something very good could have happened instead of the war dragging on like it did. The war was a bit pointless?

I'm pretty sure society was different back then and this type of thing would be impossible in present times.

World War I was caused by a complete breakdown of the diplomatic process caused by the alliances created from the age-old belief in a "balance of power". It could easily have been prevented.

This has been posted before, around Christmas time. There are countless books and songs about it. It's really a cool thing.

Of course, today it probably couldn't happen, especially since most (if not all) of our modern enemies don't celebrate Christmas.
