CM Working in a high school I am privy to a lot more info (inside stuff) than "regular" people.
It is getting harder and harder to get scholarships. Loans? Remember you have to pay them back and it also getting harder for grads to get jobs.

I wanted to get a part time summer job this year. Good luck on that! With the way the economy is now even the kids can't get jobs for summer. Forget my old self!

It wouldn't be the government... it would be us. And I strongly disagree. They (we) already pay for your education through high school. Past that, it's your responsibility.
Where there's a will, there's a way.

When do you start taking responsiblity for yourself? It's not the governments responsiblity to pay for your college. It's yours if you choose to attend college.

First of all, I consider myself a very responsible person. I have a part-time, go to an university, pay for my car, and help my parents in every way I can. I have never done drugs, smoked, or been stopped by police, not even for a ticket. But it's true that as everything becomes more expensive, it becomes harder to have the money necessary to study.
I just find that it makes sense for the government to pay for your education since a person with degree will make more money which in turn will have to pay more taxes to the government. The government spends millions on unnecessary things, while the education budget is reduced more and more. It's just an opinion, don't throw rocks at me.

we are not a nation of handouts. If we want something, we must pay for it
A university education is not a right... it is a luxury. It is NOT necessary to survive. It makes life easier, which is the definition of luxury.
Also, while paying for undergrad... get very high grades and a high GRE score. You will then be PAYED to get your advanced degree... and payed well (plus have tuition covered)

I do think the government should do all it can to help underprivileged children afford a university education. But I do think a university education in America is affordable. You may have to work your way through, and possibly start out in a community college, but if you want it bad enough it's possible. I do think the public university system should be more affordable.
My parents paid - out of their pocket - to send my siblings and I to private school and yet not once have I heard them complain about paying taxes to help the public schools. They sent me to private school because our public schools are failing and the state took them over. They just didn't think it was a good environment.
My parents were fortunately able to pay for my sister to attend a $40,000 university - Vanderbilt - in Nashville. She works for the ACLU in New York, but I'm sure she could have acquired that job with a degree from a less "prestigious" university. I mean, that is a LOT of money.
I'm going to attend Rhodes College in Memphis which is also rather expensive school, but it's nice! I think it's around $40,000 total per year, but my parents can't afford that anymore lol, but I managed to win some scholarships so they only have to pay about half that. And yes, I WILL be working in college for my spending money, just like my sister did.
I don't think the government should handout any money for kids to attend private universities, but eh... instead of spending so much on the military and extraneous (and no I am not calling the military extraneous) expenses they could give more to make a public university education more affordable.

WRONG!! Geez this attitude that the US government somehow owes you a higher education is proposterous. Higher education in the United States is attainable by all, you just have to work for it....its not free. I worked my way through school, community college thru a state university and never once did it ever occur to me that somehow I was getting screwed because ths education wasnt handed to me for free. IN fact when I was done I was incredibly proud of myself for sticking thu it and getting my degree. I now have an excellent job thanks to my hard work in college. We as Americans have got to get away from this entitlement attitude and get back to working hard for what we want.

Wait, wait, cool down. None of my posts say that I want the US to pay for my education. As an immigrant I won't ever be able to pay back what this country has done for me. My theory is that if the government pays for the education, more people would be able to get a better education and at the end, a more educated sociaty would be a more productive society and the government would get its investment back and more. Once again, don't throw rocks at me. So far I have not seen anyone debate the fact that if more people are able to get a better education, we would have a better society.

the fact of the matter is when the US government gets involved and pays for anything the cost is IMMEDIATELY passed on to the tax-payer. Thanks but I pay plenty of taxes already. I believe the government owes you and I nothing but a secure country, the rest is up to us!
