Wow. Thanks for the compliment. I am excited for the May 23rd concert (David Foster & Friends). I am sure she will make her presence felt in the entertainment world after this. Lots of big personalities attending this Las Vegas event. Charice is really a wonderful, down to earth girl. Do you know that she chats with us via YM (with webcam) whenever she has the chance? And she does not even know me personally!!!

I think that including her in the May 17 MGM Grand opening concert was a 'screen test' given to her by David Foster to verify if she is ready for the big time. And I believe she passed the test with flying colors!!! Now, if only he can write songs for her.....

Here is a nice article about Charice:

The rise and rise of Charice Pempengco
NEW BEGINNINGS By Büm D. Tenorio, Jr.
Sunday, April 27, 2008

Even with my eyes closed — by saying this I risk myself sounding like a braggart — I am a hundred percent sure I can write a thousand and one beautiful things about Charice Pempengco. After all, we were once neighbors in Gulod (a barrio in Cabuyao, Laguna) until fate brought her to places she herself had never imagined she would see, let alone perform at. But the 15-year-old singing sensation always had the conscious effort to look back. So recently, Charice and I sat down for an intimate dinner with her family and my friends. You guessed it right, the night was filled with singing and reminiscing. Her singing was electrifying. The reminiscing part was warm and touching.

She was only seven years old when I first saw her — looking all the more diminutive in her little skirt that she wore on the night of an amateur singing contest in Gulod. She sang “Dakilang Lahi” and won the grand prize, besting other seasoned contestants much older than her. I snaked my way to the backstage to congratulate the little girl in a ponytail. A voice in my head told me she would be big someday, as big as her voice. Perhaps bigger than that. I was not wrong.

Charice says she started singing when she was four. Her first piece was Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” She sang it at home, on top of a table, after cuing the Minus One she herself played on a karaoke stereo. She learned to sing by listening to her mom and her aunts who had a band before.

Barely two years after that amateur singing contest in Gulod, we saw each other again when Charice, her mother Raquel and younger brother Carl transferred to our neighborhood from Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Raquel’s kids were still very young when she separated from their father. Charice and Carl grew up with the strong yet loving presence of their mother.

One day, a thief entered their house and stole Raquel’s savings of P4,000. Charice’s instinct when she found out that their only “fortune” was missing was to search for an amateur singing contest. In the middle of the night, Raquel, Charice and Carl went to Calaca, Batangas where an amateur singing contest was being held. They traveled by bus, confident that they would be able to go home even if Raquel only had exact money for one-way fare. After three rounds of singing that lasted until four in the morning the following day, Charice won first prize with her final piece “Ako ang Nagwagi.” That song won for Charice P8,000.

Raquel eventually resigned from her job as a supervisor in an apparel factory to give support to her daughter’s growing penchant for joining singing contests all over the Philippines.

Indeed, God has been so good to Charice that doors to international fame have been opened up for her. Thanks also to modern technology, she has become a phenomenal singing sensation.

Charice admits the turning point of her career as a singer happened when someone uploaded her video on YouTube. She was able to do a recording in Sweden in June 2007 because she was discovered via Internet. It was also through YouTube that she became a guest in the talent search “Star King” in South Korea in October 2007. In December 2007, she hit it big time when she guested on Ellen DeGeneres show. Early this month, Charice made Filipinos proud again when she made it to the Paul O’Grady Show in London. And this coming May 12, as Charice reveals, her guesting on Oprah will be shown in the Philippines.

Charice is tight-lipped about the songs she sang on Oprah. “When I was singing, I could see Oprah, almost teary-eyed. She hugged me tight after I sang and asked: ‘Where are you from?’ I simply said I was from the Philippines,” she recalls.

“I owe all my international guestings to ‘false voice.’ We didn’t know each other before but he was the reason why I’m now known even abroad,” Charice humbly says in the vernacular, giving due recognition to the person who uploaded her videos on YouTube.

The “false voice” Charice is talking about is Dave Dueñas, a 22-year-old BS Nursing graduate from Bacoor, Cavite. He called his YouTube account “false voce” because “it is the other term for falsetto. I am a music lover that’s why I named it that way.”

Dave, he confesses, got challenged when he saw how many people viewed the YouTube videos of Bianca Ryan, a young singer made famous by the talent search “America’s Got Talent.”

“I really thought hard who I could match with Bianca Ryan. Then I remembered the ‘I Will Always Love You’ performance of Charice in a TV show. I uploaded it on YouTube. That started it,” Dave says.

“I first noticed Charice in 2005 in Little Big Star (a singing contest on ABS-CBN where Charice won third prize) as a wild card entry. But I believe I really first saw her when she won in Magandang Tanghali Bayan’s Junior Star Quest when she was only eight years old,” Dave tells me in a separate interview, adding that he is indeed a proud fan of Charice.

Charice and Dave are now the best of friends, calling each other “sfexial,” to denote how special truly they are for each other. They are so close that Charice put everything aside when she recently attended Dave’s graduation in Cavite. “She even gave me a laptop as a graduation gift,” Dave happily shares.

Dave says he will continue to upload videos of Charice on YouTube as he believes more things are in store for his newfound friend.

From their simple apartment in Gulod, Charice (who now goes to a home study program with her brother Carl) has gone a long way. She now has her upcoming album under Star Records. She also relishes on the fact that she has her own dressing room now every time she has TV guestings on ABS-CBN. (She says she used to change clothes in the toilet with other budding singers).

With all the international guestings Charice engages herself in, the mark of David Foster — the Canadian musician and producer who has worked with the likes of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand — is felt and seen. Truth is, Foster flew Charice to Las Vegas last December to watch the farewell concert of Celine Dion. The bigshot producer also went around with Charice in tow, introducing her as “my newest baby” which also means, according to industry observers, “my newest talent.”

Charice is indeed one young gun who, with her singing prowess, never fails to blow us away. And she’s just starting.

“Kilala nyo ako, (You know me) Tito Büm,” she says, “kahit paano nakita nyo kung paano ako lumaki, saan ako nanggaling. Siguro yung achievements ko ngayon ay bigay ng Diyos sa maraming hirap na sinapit namin noon (You know where I came from and you have somehow seen me grow. My achievements now are rewards from God for the hardships my family and I have been through),” says Charice, who will be sweet 16 on May 10.

Charice says her past experiences have made her stronger. And they will continue to inspire her to better her craft. She will keep on dreaming, she says, “for dreams really do come true.”

And like the lyrics of the first song Charice mastered when she was only four years old, her heart will go on.

:D Charice was a guest performer in the DAVID FOSTER & FRIENDS concert, May 23rd in Las Vegas. Reactions and comments on her spectacular performance are starting to trickle in:

Here are some links:

Charice: Little teeny, tiny 16 year old Philippine girl with an AMAZING voice. It reminded me of my old roommate Lea, no way can a sound that amazing come out of some one that small but it does!

My husband and I were there last night and sat at the 200 section. As someone else mentioned from Hawaii of her experience of hearing Cha sing live it sure is different. She's got this big pipe that really carries over even to our section. We found some of the stars we could not really hear what they were singing it is so different with Cha.

She wore a black and gold dress - she looked nice. Sorry but we abided with the rules no cameras but then David Foster kept on saying that we could take pictures of him but not the stars. If we only knew....

She sang I Have Nothing, got a standing ovation, I Will Always Love You, and And I am Telling you, wherein she got another standing ovation.

The only other person that got a lot of standing ovation was Andrea Bocelli. He sang 4 songs and got a standing ovation with those 4 songs. The last song he sang was with Katharine McPhee for The Prayer. It was good but it is always different with him singing it with Celine Dione who he sang it with originally. He closed the first half of the show.

Josh Groban got a standing ovation with his song You Raise Me Up. Here I was expecting Cha to have a duet with someone but was delightfully surprised that she sang solo. He closed the show.

Also, David mentioned that Ms O asked him to put Cha on his show. Oprah's producer Lisa was in the audience and was a big booster of Cha that both she and Oprah asked David to include her in the show. Of course, what Oprah requests you cannot refuse.

Hopefully, other members of this forum will post their experience.

Here is a long description of what happened last night from a devoted Katharine Mcphee fan. I highlighted the portion related to Charice:

So it was really Whitney Houston and Ken Costner who introduced her 2 songs (IWALY & IHN) via video. And she sang next to the last (before Josh Groban)

http://www.katharinefans.com/Forums/tab ... spx#136940

WOW, 4 hours of superstar entertainment was enjoyed by 20,000 fans last night at Mandalay Bay. It may not have competed with the big adventure at her homecoming in LA two years ago, but it was quite a little tiring, but great experience.

After arriving at Mandalay Bay, picking up my precious ticket at Will Call( yes, people were standing by hoping to buy a ticket(show was soldout) and successfully getting in will my small digi camera(don't know how the pix will turn out) I braved the souvenir stand to purchase a t-shirt (David Foster and Friends on the front and the list of all the performers with the Katharine McPhee).

Finally getting to my seat(surprised at finding it was just five rows up from the main floor and two sections from the stage) I settled in awaiting with excitment the concert to begin!

Finally, at 8:15 pm the lights dimmed and Andre Agassi appeared and proudly introduced and recognized the contributions of David Foster's children's foundations.

The Man arrives to wild applause playing his signature theme song from "St. Elmo's Fire."
Kenny G joins in; David sings, yes he can sing, joined by 4 Vegas showgirls becuz we're in Las Vegas!

Predicting great success, David intros handsome American Idol Michael Johns still wearing his finale tux.

I'm noticing the huge camera booms shooting skyward to the left and right. There are cameras on the mid floor and a huge teleprompter in the middle of the floor for the stars who forget their lyrics. It was a necessary distraction, cuz this concert and Katharine are going to DVD!

Katharine's fav, Brian McKnight comes on for two songs.

Woot, the moment I've been waiting for finally comes. As David gives her a warm intro and the crowd greatly cheers her(quite a few fans were there) Katharine McPhee appears at the top of the stairway, walks down to where he is seated at the piano(he accompanied everyone with the full orchestra).

Ah, Katharine looks, as ever, beautiful and elegant in her formal length black evening gown embellished by a row of ruffles down the center. Dunno the designer. maybe Mizrahi?? She begins "Unforgettable" the song she sang at her wedding, but suddenly stops and says, "wait, this is Natalie Cole's song....and tells the audience to look up at the screen that filled the background of the huge stage.

Barbra Streisand appears to wish David continued success and thank him for all his support. He produced her successful Broadway album which includes "You'll Never Walk Alone and the beautiful "Somewhere" from West Side Story.

Well, of course, our girl, Katharine sings "Somewhere" slowly and beautifully and she receives more great applause and enthusiastic "Wows" from David and "...that's the music she was born to sing".

David's baby, 18 yr. Renee Olstead sings. She has been guided by him since she was 13 yrs old??

Cheryl Lynn wakes up everyone with the rousing "To Be Real"? accompanied by a group of dancers.

Did you know David has 5 daughters and 4 sisters; he proudly introduced them.

A video showed a history of David singing with Celine, Olivia Newton John and with his first group, singing "Wildflower"? which country star Blake Shelton also nicely performed.

Then, Boz Scaggs, San Francisco's fav son, came on to sing a couple of songs he and David wrote together like, "Love, Look What You've Done To Me" from John Travolta's hit "Urban Cowboy".

Eric Benet, formerly married to Halley Berry, sings, umm, "Wrap Your Chocolate Legs Around Me."

Then, longtime friend and collaborator Peter Cetera(Chicago) performed "Your the Inspiration" and "The Glory of Love" both co-written with David. Did ya know Peter wrote and performed, "If You Leave Me Now" which Kenny Rogers first turned down and then became a gigantic hit for Chicago.

The moment that 20,000 fans have been waiting for arrives. Superstar Andrea Bocelli is greeted with thunderous applause; Bocelli is the ONE who many, many had paid $$$$ to see!!! Handsomely attired in his summer white evening jacket Andrea sings, "Amapola", the Olympic song David and daughter Amy wrote and CHFIL WITHOUT Katharine He follows with an encore not written by David, "Funiculi, Funicula". At this point, I am exceedingly disappointed thinking, Katharine will NOT be singing with Andrea this time. And oh, I was wishing that their duet would be on coming DVD too!!

Well, our wishes were granted. David greets Katharine appearing lovely and elegant in another beautiful floor length white satin? gown. Can't see her lovely gams, but after all, this is a formal occasion. And we hear the opening notes and they perform, "THE PRAYER", Woo Hoo. They are greeted by the first standing ovation of the evening. Folks, I can't wait to see the DVD video on this one. Katharine made us Mcphans very proud. She has achieved so much in just two years. Just think how much more she will become with David Foster's guidance!

INTERMISSION

I called Goody with details so far about Katharine and the show. Wished he and you could have been there!

William Joseph, described by David as like himself performed a dramatic style of music at the piano.

Kenny "Baby Face" Edmonds, also a friend of Katharine's performed.

The program was long, but props must to given to David for keeping it together with humor, some will be bleeped out and his winning charm. He's been doing this for almost 40 years!

Michael Buble, a popular crowd fav and David's find sang my fav, "Home" alone and with Blake Shelton. I wish Michael would cut out some of his chatter like, "There's Amy(David's daughter) and I'm going to marry her...we'll have real Foster kids". Is that a joke or what. I thought he was already married. Michael should just stick to singing his excellent music.

Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner via video praise David for contributing two hits, "I Have Nothing" and "I Lpve Will Always You" to their movie, "The Bodyguard". Well, this is the intro to the WOW performance of David's newest baby, Charice.

She brings the audience to their feet with "I Have Nothing" and "I Will Always Love You" and the "Your Gonna Love Me" sung by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls". Well, I watched Charice through binoculars and folks, she is the real deal. What poise and voice she expressed for someone so young. Clearly, she gives 110% and the audience stood and cheered. It was awesome.

"Who's the one person who could follow that? asks David
.

The Grobanites answer back, "Josh, Josh!!!" He performs two songs Italian which elicits another "WOW" from David who comments of the spectacular growth in 12 years of his find. " He's now a superstar filling up venues like this." He sang, "Smile",just OK for me, "You Raise Me Up" my fav and ended with himself on the piano singing, Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Brian McKnight first joins followed by all the stars who have performed during the evening.

It's four hours later, 12:00 midnight and oh, there she is again, gorgeous Katharine is standing with Andrea Bocelli who I thought had already left 11/2 hrs ago.

Gad, I thought this was suppose to be 2 hrs, not 4 hrs(half a work day); I was getting tired of listening and taken notes after 3hrs. Some of the audience started to leave then and more so while Josh was performing. Not complaining, just tired...

Cuz, I was truly one of the lucky ones to see this concert and Katharine again. How great is that. And she was awesome and made us all proud once again.

Hey, I see our Katharine is in the finale line between guess who......Andrea Bocelli to her right and David Foster to her left.

YES, Katharine McPhee is clearly living her dream "with a little help from my friends," especially her friend, David Foster.

Charice was part of the DAVID FOSTER & FRIENDS concert last May 23rd in Las Vegas. More than a dozen singers were there but it is Charice who is getting the rave reviews, aside from the more established singers like Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and Michael Bubble. .

The reviews/comments are starting to trickle in and here are some more of them.

http://forum.charicediva.com/viewtopic.php?t=2130

"Charise, the 16-year old from the Philippines, stole the show."

"HEADS UP PEOPLE!
I and my wife went to David Foster and friends concert last night May 23 at Mandalay Bay. Charice was the second to the last performer at that concert (before Josh Groban). I could say with no doubt she had the most powerful vocal performance in there to the point of David foster himself saying "I don't know of anyone yet who can top that performance". Good job Charice. You really did it. God bless! Let us support this young Filipina International STAR! " --vegasbabies2 - YOUTUBE

LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL: http://www.lvrj.com/news/19245909.html

If Groban is one of Foster's most renowned discoveries, this night truly belonged to a doe-eyed 16-year-old Filipino belter Charice, whose voice is like a jetliner taking off from her sternum.

She turned in a stunning rendition of Whitney Houston-by-way-of-Dolly Parton hit "I Will Always Love You," singing with such power and poise, it was hard to believe that she wasn't even yet alive when the song originally became a hit on "The Bodyguard" soundtrack in 1992.

"Tonight, a star is born," Foster gushed after her brief set, another grand sentiment from a man defined by them.

http://www.celebritynews24-7.com/oprah% ... anization/

In the end it was a 16-year-old Filipino singer who was discovered by talk-show host Oprah Winfrey on MySpace that stole the show.

Pint-sized Charice entered the stage through a video screen of Whitney Houston’s blockbuster Bodyguard soundtrack medley. Charice’s extraordinary voice morphed out and over Whitney’s brilliant perfection and to be honest you couldn’t tell where Whitney ended and Charice began. It brought the audience to tears and their feet for an unbelievable standing ovation!

At the stars’ after-party in Wolfgang Puck’s Lupo Italian restaurant at Mandalay Bay tiny Charice told me: “This was the biggest day of my life. I can’t believe I was on stage with all those superstars. This is all more excitement than I can think of and I don’t know where it is going to lead to but I’d like to stay here and have Mr. Foster make me into one of his stars.”

Said David: “I got a call from Oprah about this 16-year-old girl and when Oprah calls you pay attention. Oprah has been monitoring this girl and is in love with this girl, as we all are. She is an extraordinary talent and became a MySpace sensation. Listen to her and you understand why immediately, she is a heaven sent angel who is one-day going onto super stardom.”

Even Josh Groban was blown away: “There is nothing like a great musical surprise. When you hear or see something that blows your mind for the first time is great. I was waiting to go on after her, which wasn’t a good thing but I was standing there with my jaw on the floor. She has one of the most beautiful voices I have heard in a long time

Singing POWER OF THE DREAM - there was a problem with her minus one so she had to sing this acapella:

Here is Charice singing with the great ANDREA BOCELLI in his July 20 concert in Italy. They sang THE PRAYER and even though this is not her type of singing, she certainly gave her all.

:double: Charice will be the featured guest in OPRAH this Tuesday, September 9. It is reported that Charice will be guesting LIVE on the show and that the whole hour is devoted only to her. Oprah's crew went to the Philippines to document her life and she will be shown LIVE this Tuesday.

Here is the preview of Tuesday, September 9 show:

To refresh your memory, this will be the 2nd time she is guesting in Oprah. Click on the link below to listen to her sing I HAVE NOTHING. She must have impressed Oprah a lot to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity to have the spotlight once again in Oprah's show:

Any ideas what 'dream' will come true LIVE on Tuesday, September 9?
