Is it legal to pass a stopped bus in Colorado? If you passed a stopped bus here in Mississippi and hit a person that just got off the bus.......your going to jail.

It's legal in Florida. The only restriction is regarding school buses. You have to stop for stopped school buses unless you're traveling in the opposite direction on a divided road. I don't know about Colorado though.

I'm of two minds for this. Giving the guy the ticket is just adding insult to injury, almost literally. But he really shouldn't have assisted the women to cross where they shouldn't be crossing. Crosswalks exist for a reason.

OTOH, at the intersection in question, from Google Earth you can tell there isn't a crosswalk for a long way down the road, so I'm not sure what realistic options they had.

If a similar situation happened on my campus there wouldn't be much of an excuse because we have crosswalks all over the place.

Crosswalks don't necessarily give you the automatic right of way. Our university has them too but you can only cross when it says "walk" at the traffic light. On one of the streets the students push a button to activate a "walk" signal that warns the drivers to stop to let the pedestrians cross because there is no traffic light.

The only thing i can think of why they gave the driver the jaywalking ticket is that the bus stop is in the middle of a block. But if you are going to give him a ticket you have to give the other 3 a ticket also or tear up his ticket. I hope they tear his ticket up.

AP reporting that the CSP has withdrawn the $22 jaywalking ticket. Driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrians is being cited with reckless driving. This all happened during a snowstorm. I cannot imagine passing a bus unloading passengers during a snowstorm. The good Samaritan, now in serious condition......told his family he would do it again.

I went back and reread the article again. I'd like to know if that was a 2 lane street, 4 lane street or what. The driver of the truck was cited for careless driving. If it was a 4 lane road i would think that he would have had the right away. I know if i was passing a public transportation bus i would not expect someone to walk out from in front of it. I've always seen the people exit the bus and wait on the side of the road until it is safe to cross even when it is raining.

It is a major roadway on the western side of Denver.

The location is in the NW sector of Denver. Federal is six lanes with a center turn lane. It would be hard for anyone to cross on foot during a snowstorm. Unfortunate situation for all involved.
