Ever have one of those days!

#1 Postby weatherwunder » Tue Aug 12, 2003 11:11 pm

Did you ever have one of those days where you felt like it was a dog eat dog world, and you were wearing milk bone underwear?

Tell us about it.

I will start......6 meetings today at work, and found out that I will be flying to Portland, Oregon in the next couple of weeks to fix a problem that someone else in the company has created.

(involves firing serveral people when I get there) I had that job.

Just had to let go a good person, a five-year employee last Wednesday. Our list of things to do each day can change with a whim....but we must do what we are called upon to do...and do it with dignity and respect.

I have those days...mostly "those days" have helped me to appreciate all others more.

I've also learned that if I worry for days and weeks ahead about dark clouds ahead...I usually worry for no reason. And I do get through it.

You will too!

That is good advice. I am not going to worry about what the trip and letting the people go. Like you said, comes with the job.

I know all about days like that....I've had quite a few in recent weeks..

I just hope one of those you are firing in Portland isn't my sister's husband Dave :D

I've had those days, where no matter what you do, it goes wrong and I should've just slept in!

I don't envy the position that you are in. Unfortunately, that comes with the management territory and being in that position at one time, I can definately appreciate what you are going through and what my current managers and directors go through. It's a business decision, not personal, but being human, you can't help but feel awful about what has to be done.

I always hated letting good people go. I hope I don't have to do it again but it does come with the job on occasions. All you can do is tell people the truth and make as easy as possible on them.

Here's a true story....

When Becky (my sis) was working at EDS, she was forced to fire an employee on Christmas Eve :o :o :o

Sis had no choice...she was the Auditing Manager; the woman flagrantly broke EDS rules (took bribes and falsified records in exchange for favors regarding fraudulent audit reports), and then lied and attempted to bribe others to lie for her. Since it was the day before Christmas, Becky and her boss (the Account Manager) had already decided to delay terminating the woman until after Christmas...but the idiot went barging into Becky's office and cursed her out (very loudly...everyone heard it); at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Becky had no choice....the employee left Becky no choice (it was especially assinine behavor by the woman...not only was she guilty as hell, but Becky was 8 months pregnant at the time).

btw - it ruined Becky's Christmas...she sobbed uncontrollaby on the telephone when we spoke late on Christmas Day. Sis tried every way in the world to avoid having to fire that woman before Christmas...but to no avail :(

I did a brief stint in management as a project manager. I didn't like all the baggage that came with it and backed out. My department manager has a good heart and I moved sideways to a Sr. Designer. Same pay, much better job.
