MIAMI — Best not to rest when you are on the run from the law.
That is the lesson Daniel Gallagher likely learned after he sat down to rest a block away from the second of two banks he allegedly robbed on the morning of Oct. 8.
As Gallagher, 46, sat to rest, an investigating Miami police officer spotted the weary robber and arrested him.
Gallagher's tiring spree allegedly began when he walked seven blocks from his apartment and entered a Citibank. Police say Gallagher threatened to detonate a bomb unless a teller handed over $100.
The teller gave up the cash and triggered a silent alarm, police said. Gallagher's "bomb" turned out to be a cold can of Miller beer in a bag.
Nevertheless, Gallagher walked down the block to a TotalBank branch. "Beer bomb" in hand, he walked away with another $100. But his walk apparently turned to a hobble when crippling foot pain forced Gallagher to rest on a grassy patch near the Citibank.
As a responding police officer took a description of the robbery suspect from a female witness, the woman pointed to the nearby Gallagher.
Gallagher was charged with two counts of armed robbery and making a bomb threat.
When asked by police why he robbed the banks, Gallagher reportedly responded: "I'm ugly and I smell bad, so I can't get a job. I gotta get money somehow."
He is scheduled to appear in Dade County court on Oct. 29.
