Civilians in military attire

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it considered taboo to wear military decorations (ribbons, medals, etc) when you're not the recipient (with the exception being those in the acting business)? Plus, don't those who earned them only wear them on their dress uniforms?

Someone suggested that I wear my stepdad's Vietnam medals when I wear my BDU's out tonight for Halloween. I'm not going to because I value what they meant to him and what they mean about his service to our country. But wouldn't it be wrong anyway?

I could not agree more. I would not be down on wearing his rank and designation medals, but service decorations I would consider a no-no.

Wearing unadorned BDUs is OK...but adding rank, service/name strips and/or unit patches can get one in VERY hot water, epsecially if the rank is that of an officer. Medals are NEVER worn on BDUs, but only on Mess Dress uniforms; ribbons may be worn on Class A and B uniforms only, and only by the recipient of record.

I keep mine, and my late father's stuff (rank, branch of service, medals/ribbons, unit insignia) in framed cases; never to be worn again, but to be passed down.

Yup, that's what I thought. I'm trying to find a good display case for his flag and ribbons. Ebay is a good source, but my funds are low right now. So I have them all in a safe place, folded neatly and properly (a pet peeve of mine) and stored in a protective sleeve.

So, name tape with "GI Bleed" or "Upper GI" is okay

Remember, I work in a hospital. Although I won't have my costume on for another hour or so. Not sure what name I should use for tonight.

"UPPER GI" sounds good...it's not as if you're "going out" as Secretary Rumsfeld..or, are you?
