Problems with Yahoo?

#1 Postby coriolis » Sat Nov 22, 2003 10:15 pm

I try to stay away from anything Yahoo. One day I found all kinds of Yahoo stuff installed on my computer:
tool bars, items in the quick launch tray, stuff running in the background... It's like my computer was infected with
Yahoo. I don't know if a family member visited a yahoo site or what, but there's still one thing that I can't get rid of.

Has anyone else ran into this? Is MSN the same way?
I just use my ISP home page as my home page. Nothing fancy, but no hidden things going on either.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I do run adaware, but I run spybot more often - it cleans up the registry too.

The one thing that's left is listed in the Add/remove programs. The Yahoo messenger tool bar is listed there as something that I could remove. I click to remove it and nothing happens. I don't currently have any yahoo tool bar displayed. I know that somethimes things will remain on the Add/remove list even after it's gone, so hopefully that's all it is.

I haven't had problems with just checking my Yahoo e-mail,
but, using Yahoo messenger has cause considerable problems,
in the past. I use MSN messenger for chatting with friends, as,
I don't end up with alot of junk on my PC.

I have no problems with "Yahoo!" It is my favorite search engine. As Annette said, when I use Yahoo Messenger (YIM) I get disconnected after using certain features.

For some reason, I am not sure how, the "Yahoo! Companion" (the 'pointless Yahoo toolbar') "came out of the blue" several days ago. I just uninstalled it ["Yahoo Companion"].

I have gotten it a few times before. We must clicked something for it to download and install.

someone consciously made the install. yahoo doesn't just show up on your pc. the companion is actually a pretty good thing once you get used to all the things you can do with it such as edit the buttons. i have a well organized link list like a personal "favorites" that goes with me wherever i am each time i log in to yahoo. someone more than likely wanted to chat on messeneger and instead of paying attention to the d.l. choices they have, clicked on the link that installed the whole ball of wax. msn sucks period so i won't even go there but hey, to each their own i suppose... p :)

I can see the purpose for Yahoo Companion, but I rather not have it on my screen.

I know that someone has to consciously make an installation. Somehow the download came up (both times) and I ended up downloading and installing it.

Yahoo is not spyware or adware (that I know of)... If u use yahoo a lot, companion is a good thing and I have it as it is easier to check mail, store Favorites, etc... However, U can uninstall it from add/remove programs and as for the yahoo links, they are annoying and I think u can delete them through

C:\Documents and Settings\your windows logon name\Favorites

As for MSN, I have had my hotmail acct hacked, my mom has had her hotmail account hacked, and they charge now for everything...chat is now a pay service. Money hungry AOL copycats imho. Never have run into this with Yahoo.

I wasn't interested and used to using the features on "Yahoo Companion," thus I don't want it on my computer. I am content with using Yahoo's search engine. :)

I uninstalled it [from "Add/Remove Programs"].
