Well I'm going to take a shot at this and try not to be inflammatory. I don't know if that will be possible. My personal belief is that this country is at a major crossroads in it's history. Here we are with enemies all around and among us, and our friends are for the most part wavering. This country has to decide what we stand for and what we are going to do about it. This country historically stood out as a haven and an example.
Part of our population wants to re-affirm the original intents and ideals of the founders. These are documented and include at a minimum an acknowledgement of a greater power that is at work. I don't know how anyone can deny this!
The other part of our population wants to "move on."

I am not a student of history and probably know about enough to be dangerous. But aren't there parallels to be drawn between the US and the Roman empire? I think they are legion (pun intended).

IMO this country needs to wake up and get our house in order. Otherwise we are destined to be a chapter in the future history books - that is if the future allows free thought.
