Fishing Lure Warning Label: 'Harmful If Swallowed'
Panel Releases Winning Entries In Wacky Warning Label Contest

POSTED: 12:01 p.m. EST January 12, 2004
UPDATED: 12:12 p.m. EST January 12, 2004

NOVI, Mich. -- If only fish could read.

A five-inch fishing lure with three steel hooks comes with a label warning that the lure is "harmful if swallowed."

That's good enough for fourth place in the seventh annual Wacky Warning Label Contest.

The top prize went to a warning found on a bottle of drain cleaner. It says: "If you do not understand, or cannot read, all directions, cautions and warnings, do not use this product."

In second place is a label on a snow sled advising users: "Beware: sled may develop high speed under certain snow conditions."

The third-place slot went to a label on a 12-inch-high compact disc storage rack that warns: "Do not use as a ladder."

The contest is organized by the Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch.

Winners were chosen by listeners of a Detroit radio show (the Dick Purtan show on WOMC-FM).

It makes you wonder, "are we really that dumb that the labels are required?"
