Dennis, I know that every step we take away from our youthfulness is a painful one. I can't offer a lot of consolation because I'm right there with you on this one-way road.

I wear glasses to see distances. With my glasses on I can focus to about 12" in front of my face. If I take my glasses off, I can focus to about 6" away.

Dennis - LOL!!!! I think I just need to bake you a cake anyway......an almost Happy Birthday Cake!!! We can put a Golf Course on it for you, how's that? Or a couple of dogs....it is so funny that 99.9% of posters here thought it really was your birthday! You just love to confuse people, now tell the truth!

When your BD really comes, it will be even more confusing.

To clear this up - it wasn't Dennis' BD. What he meant was there went another thing to check off that list, to signify he's now over the hill. My list has included....

1. Needing reading glasses.

2. Gray hair.

Well, you were close...just add an "a" at the beginning...anyway, I have had glasses since I was 10...know how it is to need them, but better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them...

Jeremy - I had that as a teen. I had a very mild prescription for reading glasses. Doc told me to try to go without but if I got a headache, put them on. As I got older I outgrew the condition.

Of course now I have a completely different problem....my arm isn't long enough for me to read the type. That's the problem...yeah.....LOL My new ophlamologist told me simple mild reading glasses (1.75 strength) are all I really need. They're about 5 bucks at the Dollar Store. I keep about 4 pairs all over the place now - car, kitchen, purse, coat pockets. I'll find them in the couch sometimes when I vacuum it. My family thinks it's so funny how careless I am with these - but I say they're dirt cheap! If they were "real" glasses then I'd be way more careful with them.

You're welcome Eric. At least you're in good company! Yesterday as Dennis was racking up the HB wishes, I thought maybe I mis-read his original post? Then he confirmed he was just being sarcastic. And I'm sure he's real glad it isn't his BD! When you're over 30, no one wants a BD! When you're a kid, you want them in the worst way!

I forget which one is which. lol. Does that mean you could not see far away? In any case, I could not see far away and had the laser surgery about 2 years ago. No more contact lenses nor glasses so far. Thank goodness for health insurance is all I can say. That procedure is expensive.

I had stigmatisms in both eyes too. They told me I had no business driving during the day or at night. My doc told me it was from being too close to a computer all day. **SHRUGS**

I had the Radial Keratotomy surgery almost ten years ago. And my last appointment verified that my sight is still better than 20/20. Right after the surgery it was at 20/15. Very slight astigmatism can be corrected by the surgery but serious astigmatism cannot, since the lens of the eye is more of an oblong shape than normal.

Absolutely right, Jeremy, it is "astigmatism."

Dennis, it sure the heck sounds like, "stigmatism."

My father had that and cataracts on both eyes. He had them removed a couple years ago and only needs glasses for reading.
