The only bad thing you can think of saying about Pres. Clinton is that he had an affair. At the same time, he had this affair, he was creating unprecedented prosperity (1993 Budget plan which every SINGLE republican opposed led to 2.0% unemployment, 50 million new jobs, people moving from the welfare rolls to the work rolls in a record pace, unprecedented minimum wage increases, liberation of Kosovo and Bosnia, NAFTA, GATT, Environmental protection)
I would respectfully argue that most of you are Republican because of cultural biases. Most northerners and liberals are not ABORTION LOVING, GAY LOVING (absolutely nothing wrong with gays, though), PORNOGRAPHY LOVING, AFFAIR HAVING, TAX RAISING FOOLS.
I am liberal because of gun control, civil rights, environmental protection, minimum wage increases, responsible foreign policy, sound economic policy and caring for other human beings who are not in the top tax bracket.
I urge all of you to think WHY you support a president who is in the pocket of big businesses and special interests, the evangelical right, racists, etc.
I saw an interview with a southerner after Dean said "we have to appeal to the southern guys with guns and pickup trucks" so the news media went looking for this stereotypical southern guy and found him. You know what he said. "The democrats do things for all those other people."
That is a clearly racist statement. And if you recall in 1968 and 1972, Nixon changed republican fortunes by formulating his so-called "southern strategy" which was to become the party AGAINST Civil rights (nonsegregation, black voting rights.) I would argue that most southerners are staunchly republican for 1 issue and one issue ALONE, RACE. They moved away from the democratic party as soon as Johnson embraced the 1968 civil rights act. I'm sure that wasn't coincidental.
Now, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:
I DON'T THINK MOST OF THE PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM ARE RACIST AT ALL. THE FAMED SOUTHERN HOSPITAITY IS EXCEPTIONAL AND I LOVE MOST OF YOU GUYS. THE CHAT ROOM IS TOTALLY AWESOME. EVERYBODY, EVEN RIGHT-WING REPUBLICANS ARE SO NICE TO ME, EVEN IF THEY DISAGREE.
But, clearly the south is republican based on the Race issue and other social issues.
And I'm sure no one will argue that northerners and westerners are more culturally accepting of differences than southerners.
Finally, that post about Hillary having a plane crash WAS not funny and I was quite offended. I ask each and every one of you to look at that post and say "Would I find that funny if it had said Air Force One Crashes or Bush crashes". I don't think so.
P.S: YOU know, I was wondering why I supported democrats earlier today but writing this post clarified things for me. It was very cathartic.
Very good post....That post about Hillary is disgusting, I find it very hypocritical that the moderators allow that to exist yet they delete my other post replying to you saying that Republican's don't care what you think.

I believe that the reason for the post has been lost. By the way, just to clarify what I said earlier... Dean isn't surging.

For those of us that remember the whole desepregation era, the biggest riots were not in the south but the liberal north! Go figureThe South of today is leaning more and more Republican because it's the party that still holds traditional American values dear. Pride in God, country and the family. What Jason also forgets to mention that the balanced budget was the work of the Republican Congress with support from conservative Democrats. You look up the notable esteemed congressmen that voted against it and I think you'll see our friend Mr Kennedy. Edwards and Kerry are just clones of him and therefore just as dangerous. The one Democratic candidate that I would consider is Lieberman. Unfortunately he's too far toward the center for the Democrats.
"Traditional republican values". That is blatant hypocrisy. At the same time that the republicans were declaring Clinton "slick willie", let's look at what they were doing. William L. Bennett was on the talk show circuit talking about how America was in moral decline and how he couldn't believe that this "sinner" (Clinton) was in the White House. At the same time he was throwing stones, Mr. Bennett was addicted to gambling. And then we have Rush Limbaugh who railed against drug addicts well at the same time being one himself and actually ILLEGALLY obtaining prescription painkillers. But none of that compares to the 1998 House Impeachment Committee Chairman, Henry Hyde, who sat in judgement of Pres. Clinton. Apparently, his sexual values were questionable as well. He had an adulterous affair, attempted to cover it up and then forced his mistress to have an abortion. That's far, far worse than Clinton ever did. Adultery is wrong, but it doesn't afffect the job that Pres. Clinton was elected to do.
Republicans preach social values while at the same time blatantly being hypocritical. They just use the issue in an attempt to gain votes.
As for "love of country". Are you saying, Mr. MFdolphin, that democrats don't love their country just because they opposed an illegal war. May I remind you that democrats overwhelmingly supported along with the rest of the world the liberation of Afghanistan. The difference was Afghanistan actually attacked the U.S. Iraq never DID. The democrats recognized Iraq wasn't a threat to the U.S. and stood up for that belief.
Mr. Bush preaches democracy while at the same time trying to quell dissent at home. Anyone that dares question his policies is labeled a terrorist. Look no further than the case of Georgia senator Max Cleland, a decorated Vietnam war hero who lost 3 limbs DEFENDING HIS COUNTRY. The Republicans led by the despicable Saxy Chambliss ran an ad saying that Cleland was in the pocket of Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Republicans accuse Democrats of being mean and lying to get votes. The republicans do that far more effectively than the democrats.
Mr. Bush has shamlessly used 9/11 to his own political advantage. Indeed, and this is a PROVEN fact. In 2002, Karl Rove, the president's punkish chief political adviser, said that the republicans were going to run on 9/11 and use it to their own political advantage. SHAMEFUL!
And, what exactly do you mean by traditional American values. That is code and you know it. I understand a lot more about the south's past than you think. That is code language for someone who is anti-homosexual, anti-black, anti affirmative action and anti womens' rights. So-called traditional American values would lead us back to the horror days of the 1950's where women just sat at home and baked cookies, blacks had to sit at the back of the bus if they even got on at all, and segregation reigned supreme. You may not believe that. I don't know what's in your heart but Trent Lott, former republican leader in the Senate sure does.
At the 100th birthday party for South Carolina Rep. Strom Thurmond he said "we need more men like Strom and if we did have more men like him, maybe we wouldn't have all these problems that we have today." Problems? What problems was he referring to? Black rights? Trent Lott speaks what republican activists truly believe but dare not speak aloud.
And what about Gov. Bush of Florida and Cruella de Ville, AKA Katharine Harris who spent months before election day in 2000 systematically deleting the names of black voters from Florida election rolls and then positioning police officers near black polling stations on an election day to further scare african americans from voting.
The track record is not good, my friend. NOT good at all.
So....if race and bigotry have nothing to do with the republican supremacy in the south.....can you explain to me why the south turned Republican immediately after the passage of the 1968 Civil Rights Act? Was it pure coincidence?
P.S: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider this as a merely political argument. This was not an attack, personal attack, on any member of this board. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT.

Jason, I don't take your vuews as a personal attack but I do disagree with many of your points. What was Clinton's biggest mistake was lying directly to the American public about his affair and doing so under oath. There are plenty of skeleton's in both political parties Take your point about Trent Lott, where was the outrage with similar but opposite remarks from the Democratic side? There wasn't any, the liberal media give the Demodrats a free run on controversial remarks. Are you blind to those as well?
Excuse me for saying so but unless you live in the south today you don't know squat about it. While there is still some of the bigotry that you refer to there's no more than I could point you to in the North. That dog just doesn't hunt here.

As to this part, it's just plain bull. This is just sour grapes and Democratic whinning. The charges which were originally brought by Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton were proven to be false and without any basis in fact. If you're going to post this kind of comment back it up with a reputable source please. And what about Gov. Bush of Florida and Cruella de Ville, AKA Katharine Harris who spent months before election day in 2000 systematically deleting the names of black voters from Florida election rolls and then positioning police officers near black polling stations on an election day to further scare african americans from voting.

WRONG!! He is not racist. He was merely humoring Strom at his birthday party. It was a liberal reporter that started it all.
I feel Jason is an African American. And if this is so then take heed to this. You are defending the wrong people. You need to wake up to the NAACP, Black Caucus, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, ACLU and the Democrats. They do not care about you. They use you to get elected. But your view is what keeps racism alive along with the likes of them.

Wow, I haven't seen something so BLANTANTLY RACIST in a long time! You are saying he's black just because he doesn't agree with you...That's just sad. Then calling him a militant african american...Why don't you just call him what you're really thinking.

danwxman, what was so racist about it. No different than what he put out there about Trent Lott being a racist. I use militant for people who try and keep racism alive but fail to mention the other side of the argument about Democrats.
My bad about him living in the South. That makes my disagreement more stronger. He is stereotyping the South and basically I am sick of all that spew. I just get tired of listening to it.

Jason -- well-thought out and very clear posts, even though I don't share your views. I'm glad you took the time to voice your opinion and in a non-attacking manner.
As for "You guys wouldn't support any democrat, no matter how qualified or how decent." For President, it's doubtful I ever would. However, I have voted for a handful of Democrats in local elections in KY (mayoral, city council, and one time for Governor) because they were more qualified. Still haven't placed a Democratic vote here in Galveston and it's unlikely I will since they don't support firefighters.
Now, as for what you said about traditional American values being anti-black and anti-homosexual -- that's the only part I'm not clear on. Can't quite say I'm anti-homosexual now, can we?
Dan -- Linda, a racist? I don't see it. I see you being blind to reading the full context of every post. Please stop attacking individual posters and debate the actual issue. It makes this board a lot livelier when we do that instead of going for each other's throats all the time.
