Virus-Scan program - Help!

#1 Postby southerngale » Thu Apr 22, 2004 6:23 pm

I need some help please. Yesterday I started getting these popup "illegal operation" windows and when I closed them down, my computer froze up and I'd have to turn it off manually. They got more frequent and after updating and running my anti-virus program (e Trust EZ Antivirus), it didn't find any viruses. The Trend Micro site was recommended and I went there and their Housecall scan found 7 infected files but it didn't clean them. I ran my program again but it still didn't pick them up. I wrote down the names of the files and that is indeed the same numbers (for example KqngDx4d) that show up in those popup illegal operations that freeze my computer.
I also tried the manual removal method in safe mode, but the files weren't in the places they said to look.
I went to cnet/download.com as suggested by someone and have tried a couple of free trials and I get that illegal operation during the scan and it doesn't finish.

I obviously need to buy a better anti-virus program, and I think I am going to order PC-cillin Internet Security for $49.95 from Trend Micro which has several nice features but in the meantime, I need to get rid of these worms or whatever they are.

Any suggestions? :(

Southerngal, DO NOT immediately do what I am about to tell you; wait around for others to comment. (I am by no means a huge expert )

I hate to tell you this, but I think you might need to re-format. :( I know, but I had that problem back when I had Weatherbug, and in my situation that was the only way to return things to normal.

BUT AGAIN, WAIT FOR OTHERS TO CHIME IN BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING RADICAL! ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Would you believe this has been a nightmare trying to fix since yesterday and I finally get it fixed shortly after posting this thread?

It was the great mind of a human virus removal program, our newest member skyhook. He walked me through a process unknown to any virus removal program I could find and we got the infected files deleted and my latest scan did not find any. WOO-HOO!! Thanks Linda for translating everything via msn. :)

I have Ad-Aware 6 and run it daily but I do need a spyware program. I also think it's time to dump my useless anti-virus program and I guess I'll try AVG at Grisoft.com - thanks!!

Thank you skyhook!! :notworthy:

Zone Alarm wouldn't hurt either, if you don't have another firewall. I use AVG Free and it catches more than Norton did. Never had one slip through yet. Norton let 3 or 4 through.

I use Zone Alarm Pro, because the graphics are better, but I never had a problem with ZA Free either.

It's ok Johnathan. :) I already have Ad-Aware 6 anyway.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall, however I had a computer tech here on Monday on something unrelated and he took my firewall out of my startup so it may have been off when the infected files got through. Is Zone Alarm better?

Should I remove the other anti-virus programs I installed when trying to get rid of these files before installing AVG or does it not matter?

I am sure he would be pawlee. And no, he did not go through the registry editor process. I was the translator but I do not remember how he did it. lol. Maybe southerngale will remember.
