Trains Collide, Explode in North Korea

17 minutes ago Add Top Stories - AP to My Yahoo!

SEOUL, South Korea - Thousands of people were believed killed or injured Thursday when two trains carrying oil and liquefied petroleum gas collided and exploded in a North Korean train station, hours after leader Kim Jong Il passed through on his return from a China visit, South Korean news media reported.

The number killed or injured could reach 3,000, said YTN, South Korea (news - web sites)'s all-news cable channel, citing unnamed sources on the China-North Korea (news - web sites) border.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, quoting sources in the Chinese city of Dandong that borders the North, said the explosion took place around 1 p.m. local time at Ryongchon, nine hours after Kim passed through on his way back to Pyongyang.

Ryongchon is about 12 miles from the Chinese border.

I am just wondering if this is terrorist related. Because just seconds before I saw this.. I read the article about the group that wants to launch attacks against our allies

It could be. I'm not saying it isn't.

But it would require the trains to be hijacked and intentionally crashed into each other. However, it could just be a horribly tragic accident that they both collided.

What a LARGE death toll!!

I'm praying it drops and survivors are located. Remember how the first numbers coming in about the WTC were in the 10,000's? And then people were getting calls and finding out people made it out and that not everyone in the buildings perished.

I haven't seen pictures yet, but I just can't imagine.

Since it's in NK, I guess there's no media coverage or photos of it? Not that I want to see graphic photos...but it just feels odd to not "watch" online or see images of it.

They are trying to get a spy satellite in position to snap some photos of the crash scene (source: FOX News), it will take at least 24 hours to reset the satellites orbit.

I know it is probably highly unlikely.. But I really pray this was not a terrorist act. It's a terrible tragedy regardless.. But it would be worse if it were pulled off by the Al Qaeda group or the other group that is threatening attacks against our allies

But here's the thing -- would it be considered an attack against OUR allies? If NK President Kim Jong-il was the target, then that wouldn't be the case.

Of course, if it was an attack, whoever it was who tried to pull it off was several hours late.

I really feel for the victims in this crash. I have mixed emotions about how I'd feel if the NK president had been killed. But all the other innocent people should not have had to die.

Here's the first and only image I've seen so far. Can't tell what's what, but it reminded me that (duh!) it's not daytime there so it must be horrible trying to rescue people and not having the advantage of daylight.

Truly sad. I hope the number of dead is exaggerated :(

What a tragedy, hopefully the death toll will come down greatly.

Here's a satellite image of Ryongchon. DigitalGlobe.com says it's from May 2003. But if I'm not mistaken, the area in the bottom center of the picture sure looks pretty charred.

I see the area you are talking about, but I heard something on the radio today which led me to bellieve there were quite a few buildings destroyed also in the conflagration that followed the crash. I do not see that in the picture, but I could also be wrong. I do believe the death toll is now being stated in the hundreds with injuries in the thousands. any way you look at it still it is a terrible tragedy!!
