UK newspaper editor fired over Iraq abuse photos

#1 Postby BritBob » Fri May 14, 2004 2:00 pm

This from MSN news, not that I`m surprised after all the evidence against him alleging the UK troops abuse photos were faked.

LONDON (Reuters) - Piers Morgan, editor of London's Daily Mirror newspaper, has been sacked over publication of pictures of alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners by British troops that proved to be fake.

"The Board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as Editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect," the newspaper said in a statement on Friday.

Despite mounting expert criticism of the pictures, and a statement by the Government on Thursday that they were fake, Morgan insisted until the end that his stories of abuse by British troops were accurate.

"The pictures accurately illustrated the reality about the appalling conduct of some British troops," he said.

But on Friday, the newspaper's owners Trinity Mirror threw in the towel and threw out their editor.

"The Daily Mirror published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner," the statement said.

"However there is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax.

"The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR (Queens Lancashire Regiment) and the Army in Iraq," the statement added.

Morgan's ousting came hard on the heels of a full frontal attack by the QLR, accusing the newspaper of being a recruiting poster for al Qaeda and urging the flamboyant editor to step down.

The Mirror had campaigned vigorously against the invasion of Iraq.

"It's time that the ego of one editor is measured against the life of the soldier," Brigadier Geoff Sheldon told reporters.

Boston Globe apologises for alleged Iraqi rape images

Thu May 13, 2:27 PM ET Add U.S. National - AFP to My Yahoo!

BOSTON, United States (AFP) - The Boston Globe newspaper apologised for running a photograph of graphic images purported to show US soldiers raping Iraqi women.

Boston Globe Photo

An editor's note said the photograph was "overly graphic" and acknowledged that the purported abuse portrayed had not been authenticated.

"Although the photograph was reduced in size between editions to obscure visibility of the images on display, at no time did the photograph meet Globe standards," the note said.

In earlier editions, the photograph -- portraying Boston city councilor Chuck Turner and activist Sadiki Kambon showing the purported rape images to reporters -- was large enough for the sex acts to be seen.

While the newspaper acknowledged questions over the authenticity of the rape images, it did not directly address accusations by an Internet news site, http://www.WorldNetDaily.com, that they were known fakes from a pornographic website.

Boston Globe ombudsman Christine Chinlund said she had been unable to locate the source of the images.

"My attempts to figure out where the photos originated have failed," Chinlund told AFP. "The websites that they allegedly came from have been taken down, so it's impossible to say."

The published Globe apology came amid the growing furore over authentic images of US soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners of war near Baghdad.
