I don't know if I ever want to eat again...

Two crazy incidents in the past day have happened. First, we had Subway for lunch (me, Chad, and my 2 brothers) yesterday. Well, 3 out of 4 of us are sick with food poisoning today! My poor little Dustin, having to entertain himself today while me and Chad are moaning and groaning and laying around.

Now the worst part. I opened a sealed canister of bread crumbs last night, only to find 20+ BUGS in it! :x The canister was factory sealed. I only just bought it this week. I am sooooooo sick to my stomach from both of these incidents. I called Progresso and they said the can was beyond its shelf life and pretty much blamed the grocery store. (They are mailing me some free coupons, but I don't know if I want to purchase their products anymore.) I have yet to contact Winn-Dixie, but once I'm feeling better, they will be hearing from me! My best friend told me these bugs are called weavals or something??? I don't know. Just plain nasty!

What an ordeal!

Jenn - I feel for you! I have to watch what I eat very carefully, so I can relate to how reluctant you are to eat right now. Get well!

PS - I've found weavels in Jiffy cake mix boxes before. Or muffin mixes. Now I buy Martha White muffin mix. After a few times experiencing that with Jiffy products, I said no thank you!

Put some bay leaves in your pantry. It will chase the weavels out.
I put my bread crumbs, flour, corn meal, etc in the fridge in the summer. Cause weavels love the heat.

Thanks for the tips and well wishes Mary and Bonnie. I checked my pantry and thank goodness it's clean. I just bought the bread crumbs from the store the other day, so I don't think they had time to spread. I am heading to the pantry right now to put out some bay leaves as a precaution. Thanks.

Or put stuff in the freezer when you first bring it home and leave it there for seven days. That will kill them.

They're called granary weevils and can be found in seeds, grains, rice, cereals, breads (in your case, bread crumbs, Jen), and baking products. If you're absolutely certain that your bread crumbs were sealed, you shouldn't have anything else to worry about. However, if the crumbs were already opened for a while, there are chance that other stuff in the pantry might be infected and you'll have to throw that out.

Here's the good news -- they are simply a grain pest. They don't spread diseases, bite, or sting. They won't poison you and can't make you sick. Chances are, you've consumed a handful or so of the small larvae in your lifetime. They're more of a nuisance to the grain and seed farmers and sellers than anything else. :)

A bug here or there won't hurt anything. We have ants in our kitchen, and I always tell my wife that "they won't eat much." That drives her nuts.

I'll make a bet on one thing. You won't eat that same sandwich at Subway again for a long long time, if EVER!

Hope you are feeling better. When you start feeling hungry again, then you will know the worst is over.

I never could figure out which was worse, ants in the kitchen, or all those little ant hotels open for business and carefully placed within distance of my own food!!

The seafood sub at Subway has had...er...gastrointestinal
"effects" on me, before! So, I switched to another sub shop,
"Big City Deli", and, I've yet to be sick from any of them!

You're right about the ant hotels Steve. If the kitchen is squeaky clean, all you see is an ocasional ant scout. When there's crumbs and blobs of Jelly on the countertop, it's party time. what I always wondered about, is that if you give 'em enough time, they will clean your kitchen for you. I've never been able to complete that experiment though.

For ants, I spray each Spring, before it warms up. I prefer the gallon jugs (Raid, etc.) that come with a hose and sprayer attachment. The spray can be very small, to go directly into nooks and crannies. I buy generic if possible, and there is practically no smell, compared to a can of Raid. Which goes everywhere! So that's my ant tip of the day.

My kids love Subway and we eat there now for quick lunches while traveling, over McDonalds. A much healthier choice I say. But my favorite sub place of all is still Jersey Mike's - no one can beat their bread! No one!

Jen - hope you're feeling better! My mom keeps her bread in the fridge all the time. It's never sitting out on the counter!

Jen, I hope you all get to feeling better soon and thanks for the heads up about the Progresso Bread Crumbs.... I use those alot.. I don't shop at Winn Dixie but I will make sure to check the ones I have at home. :eek:

Hope your feeling better today, YUCK! Our neighbor just had food poisioning from shusi night before last.....there's nuthin' worse!

Now, to the weavel incident, could it be a part of the "low carb craze?" I mean, look at the PROTIEN in the weavels :lol: SORRY!

Hope you guys are feeling better.

I had a neighbor who got weavel in flour and it spread to everything in her pantry. Flour, sugar, breadcrumbs, cornmeal, crackers, cereal - well, you get the picture. She had to throw everything out, scrub everything down and buy everything new!!!

I didn't know there was an expiration date on breadcrumbs. Jen, I'd be headin down to Winn Dixie asap!!!!
