This is a very interesting topic for me. It is not a tradition in South Africa to dye real eggs, in fact I had never heard of it untill I came here. We have the candy egg hunts in the garden (barring you dont have dogs, I cried one year because the dog ate my eggs up! So my mom learned to hide them in the house)
We used to observe good friday with a roast lamb and an evening of prayer, on Saturday it was family and of course on Sunday morning, fresh baked hot cross buns and the easter egg hunt, after church.
I think I am going to try the egg dying this year with my son, I know he would enjoy it. I wish my mom was here to share it with me. She used to make pin holes in egss and "blow" the contents out. She would then paint the most beautiful pictures on them. (In case you think this strange, in South Africa Ostrich eggs have been painted and decorated for centuries as they were used as water containers. My mom could not afford to buy Ostrich eggs though, so she settled for the cheap option)
Will you???
