Proposed worlds tallest condo 110 stories in Miami
Developer plans world's tallest condo -- 110 stories -- in Miami
Sun-Sentinel
May 5, 2005, 7:54 AM EDT
MIAMI -- It's only on the drawing boards, but a developer is proposing to build the world's tallest condominium tower in downtown Miami.
Leon Cohen bought the property Monday for $31.7 million and is preparing to submit plans for a 110-story tower that would be 1,200 feet tall. A companion tower of the same height would be a combination hotel-apartment building.
But it may not be easy to get approval for his Empire World Towers. The Federal Aviation Administration limits the height of downtown buildings because of overflights from Miami International Airport jets.
Developer Pedro Martin, who plans to build two nearby condo towers, said his building heights were limited to 649 feet.
The proposal by Cohen's Maclee Development would include 1,000 condo units and 500 apartments and hotel rooms. The project also would be the tallest concrete structure in the world.
``This is due to the hurricane weather in South Florida,'' Cohen said Wednesday.
The world's tallest residential building, the 21st Century Tower, stands 883 feet tall in Dubai. Florida's tallest high rise is the 789-foot Four Seasons Hotel & Tower in downtown Miami.
Oh my an atraction to the bad guys meaning terrorists? And a very dangerous place to build because of Hurricanes.

I do not see many residents on the upper floors (above about floor 50) if this building does indeed get the go ahead. Though skyscrapers are met to sway slightly, I would still feel leary. I could not imagine a CAT 1 (yes, only a CAT. 1) hurricane; you could probably notice the structure sway slightly on the outside.
And, oh, yes, the terrorists got the jackpot!

Terrorists can kill just as many by doing other things. Focusing on buildings is inane because we think we are safer by staying out of tall buildings. Why? All it takes is a man with a bomb that has pieces of nails in it to get you. You die just as quickly. And we know that truck bombs can level large buildings.
They will always be able to kill. And we should always build. Stronger, smarter, better.

Just the same...you can have stronger, smarter and better small structures.

I have great concern for a structure that tall in a hurricane, much less a strong hurricane. I've seen what a Cat 2 can do to skyscrapers when we had Alicia in 1983. The terrorist aspect of it imo does not enter into the thought process. I understand the thinking, but I refuse to live my life in fear or to ask officials and private investors who are willing to go forward and take a risk to better our economy to not do it because something might happen. JMHO.

Yes I agree that the hurricane active area that South Florida is the most concern about a building like this.About the terrorist thing it is a secondary concern but after 9/11 it always come up as a valid concern.

Interesting. I could have sworn Donald Trump said last night on "The Apprentice" that his Trump Tower in NYC was the tallest residential building in the world.

He said he believed it was. Maybe someone should tell him.
